Upgrading CPU

Hi there

I currently have a Ryzen 3 3300x which has been fine so far for games like Tomb Raider and GTA5 but I've recently bought Oblivion Remastered and my PC is struggling to play it. There's a lot of lag and thats on the lowest settings.
When I enter the game I get a message saying that I need 6 cores and only have 4.

I obviously need to upgrade my CPU and they recommend a Ryzen 5 2600x

If I'm upgrading, should I look at getting the Ryzen 5 3600 or should I look to future a proof a bit by either getting the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or the Ryzen 5 9600X.

I appreciate that the 5700X3D has 8 cores compared to the 6 of the others but it is also 105w where as both the Ryzen 5 3600 and the 9600X are 65w which is the same as my current cpu so wouldn't need to upgrade my psu.

What are peoples thoughts as I'm unsure which would be the best option now and for the next few years?

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Sorry, should have posted my full specs. Please see below:

Can you post your full specs from your orders page?

It's difficult to recommend an upgrade without knowing which platform we're looking at.

Ryzen 9000s will most likely not work with your motherboard (which I guess is an AM4), thus you will be limited to the Ryzen 5000 series.

The Zen 2 3300X is a very efficient CPU, but even when new it was intended for productivity, not gaming.

That AM4 platform only supports upto the Zen 3 5000-series CPUs, so a 5700X3D is about the best you'll get. The 7000/9000 CPUs require a whole new AM5 platform with DDR5 RAM - so that's out of the picture for a simple upgrade.

But it won't be just the CPU holding you back, your GPU and RAM may need upgrading too, and if you've got the Wraith cooler on the 3300X it won't be enough to keep a faster, more powerful CPU cool, so budget for a new cooler too.

The fastest non-X3D (i.e. non-gaming) CPU you'll find that fits is probably a 5800X or 5800XT (if you can find a new one) - would still need a better cooler to keep it running optimally. A 5700X is cooler/cheaper and could get away with a cheaper/smaller cooler.

Unfortunately, I see a major issue with that build: the PSU that is completely insufficient to handle any modern hardware upgrade.

Are you running any games on the Seagate HDD? If that's the case, everything will slow down significantly.

What's your max budget and what monitor are you using, anyway?

I run my PC through my Samsung ultra 4K TV.

I only play 1 game at a time off the SSD and once I've completed or want to start another gsme, I just move it over to the HDD for storage.

One of the reasons I was looking at the Zen 5 3600 as it is the same wattage as my current cpu.

I know the zen 5700X3D is 40w more so would need to upgrade the PSU too.

With a 1650 SUPER? It's no surprise you're struggling; that GPU isn't even enough for an entry-level 1080p resolution.

I'm afraid you'll need to upgrade more than just the CPU there...

If you can tell us your maximum budget, we can attempt to work something out, but I honestly wouldn't spend any money on such a build.

The whole reason I went for a PC over a console was so I could upgrade as when needed.

I don't have a specific budget in mind but I got this build 5 years ago with the expectation to upgrade as I went along.

Surly, upgrading will still be cheaper than a new build right?

The GPU has been fine up till now and never had any problems with any games I have played so far. Forza Horizon 5, GTA Online, Tomb Raider and even Elder Scrolls online which is why I'm surprised it didn't handle Oblivion Remastered. I appreciate that they have really upped the capabilities for the game and that it needs 6 core CPU over a 4 core CPU, but my build hasn't struggled up till now so more than happy to just upgrade what needs doing.

Any suggestions on what you think I should upgrade and with what would be more than appreciated. I obviously don't want to buy a whole new PC but am happy to pay around £200 for a new CPU and then what ever else I need to run it and then I was looking at upgrading to the Geforce RTX 4060 unless there's a better value GPU that would work just as well or better?

I appreciate that things like the PSU will need to be upgraded to withstand the extra usage of any upgrades so I always expected that any way.

That's good, but your build was not designed to be upgraded, regrettably.
I guess you didn't get any advice before purchasing that PC, did you?

The critical components (case, motherboard, and power supply) are quite low-end and, in my opinion, incapable of handling any modern upgrade.

When I was originally getting the build from PC Specialist, I was looking at their GTA5 gaming PC that were advertising. Posted the specs in a forum on here and asked advise.

Ended up been told by a few people to go for the specs I have.

This was the build spec that was suggested:

We did in fact strongly suggest that the budget you had wasn't sufficient for a worthwhile gaming pc, we ended up designing something to your budget, but did state it wasn't a good system.

Hi there Spyder.

Don't get me wrong, the PC has done myself and the family fine for the last 5 years. Just thought that as I needed to, I would be able to upgrade it.

Isn't anything about this build upgradable to modern standards???

It's not built for upgradeability, you'd have to replace most of the platform to be able to support anything higher end, at which point it just doesn't make sense as you end up with an entry level case that can't support the components etc etc etc, plus PCS don't do those upgrades as part of their service, so you'd need to know how to build the PC yourself.

Best option would be to bite the bullet and replace it. It's not worth upgrading IMHO. I don't think you'd save any money anyway in the scheme of it.

I admit I didn't read the original post, and I wasn't even as active 5 years ago as I am now on the forum, but the build was suggested to you with a budget that was essentially insufficient for a valid and upgradeable system (which is the paramount of the Custom PC), so I don't think I can blame whoever suggested those specs.

Unfortunately, that PC is poorly designed and does not allow for upgrades, as mentioned by @SpyderTracks, with whom I agree wholeheartedly.

This is exactly why I flat out stopped recommending such low end systems. Just doesn’t make any sense when it comes to upgrade time

I know I need to upgrade the CPU as the game needs 6 cores rather than the 4 cores I currently have.

Also the GPU would need updating too.

Just wondering if I can salvage this PC with upgrades or would need a whole new build.

I currently use the Ultra 4K TV in the lounge to play games rather than a monitor.

Not struggled with games in the past but Oblivion Remastered is very laggy on this current system.

Any advice on if it is upgradeable or needs a whole new build would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think the answers will differ from the previous ones.
