Upgrade Vortex IV with second hard drive?

Hello there,

I apologize in advance as I dare say I just cant work the search properly (I really did try to find an existing thread with this info but failed miserably).

I am the proud owner of a Vortex IV LE (I believe, it was almost a year ago I bought it - the order says: "
Vortex Series: 15.6" Matte Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)"). It's an i7 with an nVidia GeForce GTX 765M.. if that helps?

The 120GB SSD i have just gets filled too easily and I was wondering if it is possible to add a 2nd drive to the machine (with or without) sacrificing the optical drive using a caddy? I would prefer not to replace the existing drive but didn't want to open the machine up fully to see if there was a space for a 2nd drive. Is it easy enough to install the drive in place of the optical area and is there any performance issues of doing this (ie is it a full speed sata connection or slower?)

Hello IHxlnfi,

Sorry to say but its not possible without the sacrifice of the optical drive, you would need to order up the 2nd drive cady and perhaps consider a USB optical drive, unless there is a cable you can get to tuen your existing optical drive into an external one, might be worth a look.

Thanks Mike,

That's not a problem I already have a USB BluRay drive lying around and in fairness I very rarely use optical media, was asking more just to see if there was maybe another slot I wasn't seeing that perhaps needed more screw removing. Thanks for the information none the less. Is there any issue with speed using the optical -> hard drive converter for another SSD?

Thanks again!

Not a problem at all, its only the 17" that has two slots for hard drives, not that that's any use to you now sadly.

No you should receive the same speed at if it was connected to the primary bay.

That sounds pretty brilliant ...if anything this will save me constantly ejecting the cd rom when my mouse hand casually grazes the eject button!

Thanks for all the help!

Out of curiosity, would this port here be to do with adding a MSATA SSD?

Obviously 120GB is too small for this day; no wonder it gets filled up quickly.
