Hmm definitely seems that Norton messed up with an update or something, glad its working now. system restore is one of the best ways to get out of a 'what the hell is going on' kind of situation, mostly because with things like you experienced it can be a bit of a nightmare trying to track down the culprit.

Failed again a few hours later. :(

Did a repeat of the System Restore and it still doesn't work.

What's happened to my browsers? This has never happened before.

When did you restore the system to? It could be that Norton or windows is installing an update that is causing you the problems. try an earlier system restore point.

I only have a choice of two, so I used Sunday's auto.

I do have an image restore from January (stored on an external hd). Why is there never a big choice of restore points? Last week, last month? Even though I have allowed it alot of space? That's more of a rant than a question since I would sensibly want it to always store last week and last month and not overwrite all the time.

Can you not select to 'show more restore points' in a little box that's directly below the list of available points?

Mine is set to create a restore point after update, installations - anything that can break the system. Might be you have to change the settings for yours.

if it is really causing you problems then it might be worth restoring the image you have, or maybe even a clean installation. I like to do clean installations periodically anyway for general system health reasons. Might be a bit extreme for just this issue but it will certainly help the system overall if you can be bothered to do it.

I never did a Restore Image (wanted the pc still operational during a critical few days).

Today, weeks after my original post, I discover two things.

1. My browser upload/download hang problem is no longer a problem. It works fine today! All by itself. Eh?!
2. My automatic System Restore points are gone AGAIN.

There should be one Restore Point for every Windows update for the last four months. I have never turned it off, deleted them, or reduced the space allowed (indeed it has a massive 139gig - and the manual point I have just made only takes 89mb). Might be a new thread coming if I keep losing Restore Points. But I just don't get it. It's as simple as this: System Properties > System Protection > Protection Settings > Configure > Restore Settings (first of only three options selected) Restore system settings and previous versions of files.

Anyone see anything wrong there? Why this won't create a list of Restore Points? YES I DID TICK THE POINTLESS LITTLE BOX DOWN ON THE LEFT Show more restore points (if it's actually showing).

Hmmm, anyways now I notice my Norton Anti-Virus needs updating, so lets see if this breaks everything....

All working.

Browers tested for upload/download capability after a reinstall of Norton AntiVirus via remote link with Symantec support (30 minutes all-in, not bad!).

Made two manual System Restore points. Let's see if they are still there later this week.

I was working with someone else on a completely different forum a few days ago with this exact problem. It turned out to be a Virginmedia issue, that's probably why yours has started working again now too.

Frankly, System Restore is not up to the task and I never rely on it for restoring my system. You are much safer getting a copy of the free version of Macrium Reflect from http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx, and taking regular disk images. I cut a disk image before every Windows update or before any major software change. It's quick and you can use the PC whilst the image is being written.
