Ultranote IV - screen flickering - odd one

I have an utranote IV where the screen flickers on and off. Feels hardware related and not software as it also presents on the bitlocker screen and a physical poke of the machine may cure it

I've seen things like this before, and reseating the cable connecting the cable to the motherboard would solve it, so I did that, no joy. Reassembling it may have made it occur less.

I did notice that the screen would not display at all unless it's attached to the screen frame (i.e. it's needing some sort of metal contact to get power). I can't make my mind up if it's eDP cable, the LCD screen itself or heaven forbid the motherboard. Though when it does flicker, squeezing the screen at the edge brings it to life so I am thinking to replace the screen first then see how it goes, but open to suggestions..

It does sound like the screen is starting to fail. The fact it's happening on bitlocker screen rules out drivers or windows and points to hardware.

Quite often it's the backlight that starts to go, you can tell this, when it flicks off, take a strong torch and shine it directly on the screen and look very close, maybe make out some desktop images etc. If this is the case you need a new screen.

Otherwise yes, it's usually the connecting cable that is fraying or deteriorating in some other way.

If you log into your main PCS account page and go to the Upgrades section or Spares section, they'll have replacements in there which you can order.

If you're hesitant about anything, give PCS a call, they'll talk you through some things.

This is essentially how my UltraNote's usefulness came to an end. I had the screen flicker for about a year before the screen finally died, although I can just about see the PCS logo when it starts up so it's probably the backlight that has gone. I got the laptop in 2014 so I figured I might as well upgrade at this point to a newer model, rather than fix the screen.
