I have had a single monitor connected to my laptop via hdmi for a while. I have bought a second monitor and connected it via mini DP. This causes ubuntu to enter low graphics mode and I cannot use the UI.

I have tried mini DP to hdmi and vga without success. I have tried installing dispaylink b

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.3 (kernel 4.15). I have an Nvidia GTX 1050.

I have confirmed both monitors work fine individual using hdmi only.

Any ideas?

Do you have the Nvidia Server Settings tool? I'm running Ubuntu 19.10 and it came pre installed. It has on-demand and performance GPU settings, maybe it would help

I'm using Debian, but Ubuntu isn't too far away. It might be helpful to add a few more informations about your OS.

Kernel: $uname [minus a]*
Driver of nvidia: $cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
Modes for all connections: $xrandr

I know that there are a lot of isues using higher definition than HD not only with Linux, but also with windows. Also still with GPU which were launched two, three years ago. Which solution does your monitor have?

* Sorry, forum doesn't let me save when I type in the command as you do it in the console ...

Thanks for the replies. The problem was that, even though I had the proprietary Nvidia drivers available, I was actually using the open source ones.

Here were the steps to fix the issue:

- I opened software updater
- Went to Additional Drivers
- Under Nvidia I had 'Using X.Org X Server' selected
- I changed this to 'Using Nvidia driver.. (proprietary)' and everything works
