Turning 30 - Pushing the boat out £4k(ish) build

Hi all,

I've decided that I'm treating myself to a larger than life build for my 30th. This build will be used for a vast amount of tasks (not mainly gaming). I do a lot of video editing (After Effects, Premiere Pro) with lots of video encoding too, all at the same time as trying to edit over bits too. It will likely be used to capture devices down the road too for conference type events through vmix (capture device to follow). Below is the build, minus monitors (as I said, more productivity than gaming).

What is everyones thoughts? Future proofed?

Good morning!

I’m not much of a spec creation guru - but the rest will be here shortly I expect to assist. What I would say though would be:

The NZXT case is a hot box - you will need something better - the gang here will advise.

The Crosshair VIII Hero motherboard I think is the top end offering and is worth considering.

You absolutely need better cooling. For a build like this you should have the best you can get - which is likely the H150i Elite Capellix AIO.

The PSU needs an upgrade also - RMx 1000 would be my personal minimum for such a build.

Storage could be improved also. You can add a second M.2 in the configurator which would be my strong preference to make full use of the X570 chipset - as it can handle two full speed (PCIe Gen 4.0 @ 7,000 MB/s) M.2 drives.

And OverClocked Ryzen is rarely a good idea - as while the all core performance is better, the low core count performance is significantly worse. However yours might actually be one of the few cases where it might make sense to do it! Just make sure you understand how it might affect your workflow - if you do a lot of multi core stuff - where you’ll frequently be using more than half the cores of the 5950X at the same time, then it’s probably a good call. Otherwise stock might work just fine.

Just bear in mind that an OverClocked 5950X uses a lot of power and puts out a lot of heat. So you want premium components to keep the system happy.

Oh - and drop the Arctic Thermal Paste as most AIO’s will come with paste ore-applied.

And upgrade the warranty too. Even just Silver Warranty for £5 can’t be argued with - but at £4K + I would want lots of protection!

What sort of RAM usage do you currently get, out of curiosity? I know Premier Pro can be memory intensive but there's a case for going for 64GB of faster RAM and then chucking a small SSD in the system to configure as a scratch drive, depending on the amount of RAM being used.

That being said, if we left the RAM as is, these are the other tweaks I'd make to the system..

Hey!

This forum and the people in it are amazing! So glad to have the help from others on such a large build. My thought process is that the RAM stays as is. Better to over than under spec. I may just bite the bullet and get 2 slightly larger M.2's and as you say use as a scratch disk rather than an SSD to save any bottle necks with multiple projects running.

I'm currently running 32GB 2666MHz on an Dell XPS which when running vmix and video through with a few calls in can get a bit touch and go. It's been a powerhouse but I'm hoping to future proof now.

Thanks NoddyPirate for your input too! Handy to completely understand the core performance of the 5950X v other Ryzen 9's. Something to weigh up.

I wasn't too far off I think @AgentCooper ? :) I had tried creating a spec but the case options were all Gobbledegook to me......

Fitting the H150i into a case can be a problem - so AgentC's has chosen the H115i for his case as the H150i won't fit (EDIT - or maybe just because the H150i isn't needed! @AgentCooper will know better than me!), but it's still a super option, particularly with a non-OC CPU.

I do worry about SSD's as scratch drives personally - cos they are orders of magnitude slower than RAM (as in DDR4 RAM is 60 times faster than a typical SATA SSD and 4 times faster than the fastest M.2 available) - they are great if your RAM is full of course, but I kind of see them only as an emergency measure more than a plan.
