Thoughts on first new PC in 9 years

Hi all!

I am very excited to have the opportunity to build my first custom desktop PC, although it is unfortunately due to my last PC processor giving out. I have read through similar forums online and would love for your input and advice on my current PC design and any areas for improvement.

The specs are as follows:

Processor: i7 14700K
Motherboard: Gigabyte B760 Gaming X AX DDR4
Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3600MHz (2 x 16)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 4070
Graphics Card Support Bracket: PCS Standard
1st M.2 SSD Drive: 512GB SOLIDIGM P44 Pro Gen 4
2nd M.2 SSD Drive: 1TB of the same ^
PSU: Corsair 850W RMx Series Modular 80 Plus Gold, Ultra Quiet
Processor Cooling: PCS FrostFlow 360 Series ARGB High Performance Liquid Cooler
Thermal Paste: Standard PCS
Case: Fractal North in White

My budget is realistically £1300 but would like to keep it down where it is practically possible!

My current monitor is a MSI G24C

I have read quite a bit online that stresses the i7 14700K requires alot of cooling so a liquid cooler is especially important, is this true?

Also the case I have chosen, should this be okay for sufficient cooling and space, I understand this is also important that the case can support the components properly.

Apologies for any silly questions! I have spent my past few days researching and hope this build is worthy :)

Hello,
You may want to read this first ^^

I'm not the best at desktop, but i'm not sure you will have something decent with 1300. Or it's maybe a typo ?

Hi,

Apologies I thought I’d included it all but I can see I missed off my use!

I am looking to have a ‘future proofed’ desktop build where I can modify it and change components in a few years where needed (notably the GPU)

I should’ve mentioned, the reason my budget is £1300 is because I have a GTX 4070 passed across by a friend of mine who is upgrading his rig and is kind enough to gift this to me for my build. So that cost is not in my budget.

Please let me know if you need any other info and apologies if I’ve missed anything!

Hi, if I understood well you have already a 4070 so GPU should not be included in your new rig, is that correct?
Which is the system's purpose? Just gaming or else?

I'd go for something like this, but I'd also consider upgrading your current MSI G24C as it has an FHD panel.

That's just my point of view. :)

Hi,

Thank you very much for the input and reply!

I have not had an AMD cpu before, can I ask why you prefer this CPU to the one I had chosen? :)

For the PSU, is 1000W definitely needed? From what I can see online 850W should be enough but perhaps I am missing something!

On the processor cooling, would the previous PCS one I chose be satisfactory and if not, can you guide me on what part is better for the Corsair one you mentioned? :)

Also, would the processor cooling Corsair one you chose, be sufficient for the i7 14700K if I chose to go ahead with that?

Thank you for your guidance it is really appreciated! :)

7800X3D is the best gaming CPU on the market.
I think AMD is a significantly better option than INTEL in terms of power consumption, temperature, cost, future upgrades etc.

850W is sufficient; 1000W is not necessary, but it will provide you more room for future upgrades and will only cost you an extra £25 pounds. It's up to you. :)

Personally, I think the Corsair AIO has a better aesthetic but you can save money by switching to a slightly less expensive Deepcool air cooler.

Not sure; I'd go with a premium 360mm AIO for INTEL.

Anyway, I am sure you will get some more suggestions. :)

Thank you very much for this. I have not used AMD before but having looked into it, I can see that it is a massive boost to gaming with the AMD one and it still provides great performance now and future-proof for general tasks. Also I am very keen on being able to have DDR5 RAM!

I take your point on the 1000W PSU. For the price difference, it makes sense to future proof as that is one of my main goals.

Corsair AIO looks good, thank you.

How come AMD doesn’t get as much of the hype as Intel online? 👀

I'd 100% go with the AMD option. It's just better in every way. The only reason to choose Intel is superstition.
Thanks for this, having checked the CPU’s online I can certainly see the AMD CPU outperforms the i7 14700K by quite a margin in gaming but performs ‘slightly’ less at other tasks.

Definitely agree for gaming it is ideal and to be honest the difference in other tasks wouldn’t even be noticeable I imagine. I currently had a 6th generation i7 so any jump will be massive! :)

Why do you think AMD doesn’t have the hype that intel seems to pull in?

The "other tasks" are principally heavy tasks like video encoding. For everyday stuff you're unlikely to perceive a difference.

I think it's just that Intel is a massive company with big name recognition and market share going back decades. Anyone covering the space currently will acknowledge AMD's advantages.

Any 3rd party review over the last 5 years or so has been heavily critical of Intel.

It depends what sites you’re looking at, there are a few that are Intel shills. But for a while now AMD have been the go to for most circumstances.

Just want to thank you everyone for their replies and helping me design my next build. I will likely purchase it over the next 3 months as splitting the cost between paycheques!

Do you all recommend that I re-post in the next 3 months just before I order to re-check if any components I should use have changed?

Always check in before purchases: availability and prices change all the time.
