thinking of upgrading for 4k 144fps

for context heres my current build:
cpu: i7 8700k overclocked to 4.81ghz
cpu cooler: corsair H80i v2
gpu: msi gaming x gtx 1080ti
ram: g skill trident z 16gb @ 3466mhz
mobo: gigabyte z370 aorus ultra gaming atx
boot drive: 500gb samsung 960 evo nvme m.2 ssd
psu: corsair 850w rmx series, modular, 80 plus gold
case: corsair spec-alpha red/black

i originally built this pc because i wanted to try out 4k gaming, and whilst watching movies or youtube was crystal clear i wasnt too impressed with the framerates i was getting, and i didnt want to play on anything other than max graphics (otherwise whats the point of 4k gaming amirite?) but it just wasnt possible at the time without some insane dual titan monster. so i swapped to a 1440p 144hz monitor which has been great ever since...
but now with the release of the 3080 ti making it possible to hit those numbers with a single card and the Acer Predator XB273K being able to display those numbers without requiring me to sell 3 of my kidneys it really seems viable. but with the card and monitor upgrade costing close to 2k (my original build + all the peripherals cost me 3k) i definitely wouldnt be able to upgrade anything else... so my question is could my current setup support 4k @ 144fps if i sell off the 1080ti and slap a 3080 ti in there?
i planned headroom for upgrades so i have plenty of excess wattage in my psu, the main thing im worried about is the cpu, being an overclocked intel chip that sonbitch runs HOT and i could only fit a dinky AIO in my case

The only area that may be a concern is the physical size the case can accommodate for the GPU, but the PSU has enough headroom and everything else is fine.

Personally I’d say the 3080 is probably a better value than the 3080ti and would be easier to get hold of.

hmmmm... well considering my other concern was cpu overheating (i was originally suggested to get h100i v2 but it wouldnt fit in my case)
i could always get a new case and upgrade the cooler while im at it, would be a tiny cost compared to the gpu/4k monitor. especially if i can save a few hundred on the gpu...
you really think i could get away with 3080 over 3080ti? id rather stay at 1440p 144fps than go 4k if it means im dropping to 100~ fps
id be fine with waiting a few more months for the market to be less messed up, but if its only gonna get me another 5fps average ill just go with the 3080

Reading and watching reviews it doesn't sound as though the Ti is really worth it over a standard 3080

At 4k, the FPS increase a 3080ti will bring vs the increased cost is barely worth it imho. Just like the 3090 wasn’t worth it.

DLSS brings the boost that you need to most modern titles, and older titles will be higher FPS anyway.

New case and cooler certainly wouldn’t hurt.

sweet, i dont play too many huge AAA games so i can probably get a bigger case, slap in a 3080 and a bigger cooler and go straight up to 4k without too much frame loss... razor sharp and buttery smooth all at the same time here we come!

now i just gotta get my hands on one of those cards eh? 😭

i read one review that basically claimed the 3080ti offered 3090 performance at half the cost lol. and others that were confused why the 3080ti even exists. theyre all nonsense at least there will always be forums like this for unbiased advise :)

As normal, the top tier cards, the xx80ti and the Titan/now 3090 are always exorbitantly expensive for very little gain, it’s been that way for yonks. But to those who just want the best at whatever cost, it’s worth it.

now you mention it i seem to remember userbenchmark being the deciding factor when i got the 1080ti over the 1080... and have since learned that they too peddle nothing but hokum :LOL:

@SpyderTracks hey i did some thinking and checked some benchmarks out and it looks like i can get similar performance to a 3080 if i combine 2 1080tis, considering 3080s are going for around 1.5k and 1080tis are about 400 and i already have one it seems crazy to not just sli. provided my specs could also handle that? literally never had 2 gpus but i assume its more power hungry than 1 better card

A 3090 at 4k was like 9 fps more at £600 more the standard 3080 is all anyone really needs the 3080ti is a card that does not need to exsist its so bizarre !!!

1080ti dont have raytracing etc plus the heat of 2 gpus plus 2 more points of failure just would not recommend it

to be honest im just looking for the res upgrade without sacrificing frames, i dont play most of the titles that support RT anyway. ill be saving up and building an amd rig in 2/3 years anyway, ill be going with whatever version of the current r7 5800x + radeon rx 6900 they bring out. at that point my current pc will be 6 years old so i wont feel bad about selling it off

i definitely dont want to wait 3 years for 4k though so right now i have 2 options, replace 1080ti with 3080 or get another 1080ti and sli
considering the people lucky enough to get a 3080 will probably selling on their old 1080tis im hopefull that ill be able to get my hands on one easier.

i have no idea how sli affects thermals but my gpu tends to run pretty cool even when i push it, the msi has a hell of a cooler on it the cards like 2 inches thick lol. i could grab some extra fans too just in case.
