Hey all,
I thought it would be good to see how many of us shared similar early gaming experiences...

Name a title, give it a brief description and maybe why it lives well in your memory...

Tyrian 2000
Arcade vertical scrolling sci-fi space-ship shooter, you control a ship with guns, BIG GUNS! Enemies fly at you from (mostly) the top of the screen and you blow them into the middle of next week. It has about 20 levels and you earn credits to upgrade your ship & guns and once you've done all 20 levels... you just start the cycle again!
Awesome fun, it's actually older than Y2k but they re-released it then, it's also now available on the iphone as an app (search the app store for tyrian).

Baldur's Gate 2
Bioware are known for their RPGs and they kicked off this series with Baldur's Gate but the sequel was just epic, truly epic. If you've ever liked RPG games then you need to play the King of Roleplay games. I love it for many many reasons.
It has one of the most engrossing stories that runs at a pace but you can choose to take some time out from that to do side quests.
There is a massive amout of voice acting, most of it very good.
It's MASSIVE, absolutely huge, if you played Mass Effect 1 + 2 + Dragon Age Origins + expansion then you've probably played about the same amount of content as BG2 has.
It's also flippin' difficult, if your character dies then you need to load & try again. If one of your allies (parties of up to 6 so 5 allies) die then you need to resurrect them... but they can also die permanently, gone, forever, just like that!
It keeps you on edge and gives you a healthy fear of Beholders, not those noncy beholders from Neverwinter nights that died in 3 seconds.
It has some of the best bad-ass bad guys in the history of bad guys ever.
It has some of the best good-guys too, "GO FOR THE EYES BOO!"
It has great replay value, I've played through this game about 5 or 6 times and just by writing about it now I'm tempting myself to dig out those 4 discs and keep going! I don't care that the graphics are poor, the backgrounds are flat & the characters have limited animation, this is truly a case of gameplay > all!

What are your great gaming memories? I have more but I'll leave it as those 2 for now!

I'll be the first to open the can of worms that is Final Fantasy 7:

Purely for the music, gameplay, story and graphics (which at the times was seriously stunning, and for long after also!) the music was epic and the story was immense it really immersed me in the world. Game play was simply faultless, mix and match materia and the mini games where awsome! i still havnt completed the game! (shocking i know) but i just cant bring myself to end years of ff happyness. I have played through the the final boss about 20 times tho.

I missed baldurs gate wizardry pokery as i was stuck deep in the original Fallout.

It was finally an epic RPG without a dragon to be seen. The music and the combat stand out in my mind. Closely followed by Fallout 2.

These games were so far off the curve at the time it was amazing. Rich and deep storyline throughout set in a very detailed universe. And its post apocalyptic you have to love that. I have played through 1 & 2 hundreds of times and am fairly confident they are 100% completed. Then came "Fallout: Tactics", the less said about that the better. Then after a few ridiculous fps console games and about a decade we got fallout 3.

Although truer to the originals than i could have ever hoped and an awesome game, Fallout 3 didnt quite have the same magic as the originals. But it did have harold who had actually grown into a full blown tree.

Im just kidding, HIS NAMES BOB!

Microprose Grand Prix2 by Geoff Crammond

Released in 1996 based on the 1994 World Championship with the Likes of Senna and Ratzenburger left out due to thier deaths at the Imola GP of that year (sad times)

I remember being simply amazed at the graphics at the time, I gained a place in my heart because I got into the moding scene with this game and started painting customer cars and with the release of GP2edit by Simon Young I began making season packs (carsets) as the years progressed.

I miss it lots but compared with today's games it just cant cut it with the mod ability and graphics.

I think i remember that game dave. You could increase the laps to that of a proper grand prix if i remember, and also the cars could suffer from realistic failures as well. It was cool.

that is one of the best games ever released on console, if not THE best. I still have my PS1 copy of it in pristine condition. I bet it's worth a few bob now.

I always loved the microprose F1 games, GP2 is the only one I never got though. I can still remember being blown away by the graphics. to look at it now though and compare it to the games of todays standards, it's staggering just how far gaming graphics has come in less than 20 years.

heaven knows what level they will be at in another 20 years.

Yeah you could I got my first steering wheel at the same time and I used to race full length races, what a game. Also yes the mechanical failures were really good. I remember getting engine or gearbox failures, punctures and the occasional total failure.

Now I race like crazy with rFactor and Netkar Pro one my G25, waiting for F1 2010

And for real nostalgia 'Meteors' and 'Magic Mushrooms' for the Acorn Electron.

'Meteors' is the first game I really remember playing - ok, yeah, you were a spaceship that looked remarkably like a triangle and you could only spin on the spot, but you could blow things up!
And 'Magic Mushrooms' was an early platformer where you could even design your own levels, hey that was pretty good going for the time!

that won't be an officially licensed F1 game, it will be a ferrari licensed game with alonso and massa, all the other teams will have names like walliams, mclennan rad ball, and the drivers will have names like jason baton, marcel shoemaker marc weaver.

naturally, ferrari will always finish ! & 2.

mercedes will be releasing their own "F1 sim" game, again unlicensed, and following the same vane.

it will be a full race sim with an arcade option. the race sim side of it will require you to race for points while having full control over things such as car set up skills. the arcade side of it will require you to drive everyone else off the track and get away with breaking & flaunting the rules wherever possible

:)

I remember almost wetting myself when I saw the loading screen for robocop I thought it was that amazing, when I look at it now, I can't help but laugh.

also reminds me of how bad the loading times were back then. can you imagine the youth of today having to wait 10 minutes and more for a game to load from a cassette?
