The most iconic keyboard ever made?

Alright, I'm going full nerd with this one, but I've been in awe of this "piece" for a long time now and it needs public celebration. Logitech need to release a follow up!

In 2009, I got quite a large cheque out of nowhere at a time when I was very poor. I had had a PC previously, but it was a very entry level AMD build and wasn't great for gaming. So with this kickback, obviously I blew the lot on a self built PC. Much merriment was had.

I didn't know a lot about gaming keyboards back then, but knew I wanted wireless as I watched movies on the PC when in bed.

So I invested in this, and I have to share it with you all, because quite frankly, there has never been a keyboard like it before or since.

The Logitech diNovo Edge

It was really a media center keyboard with circular trackpad built in. It cost around £150 direct from Logitech, but quickly was available at other retailers for around £100 at the time which was still extortionate, but the top panel is black glass with aluminium wrist wrest. Function keys and volume bar and trackpad all illuminate when activated. The volume slider is touch sensitive through the glass. The battery life was around 5 or 6 months off a single charge when new. It comes with a cradle for charging, so no need to plug it in, just rest it in the cradle. It was also only 11mm thick at the top edge, and only 3mm at the bottom wrist wrest.

Mine starting giving error warning when I was charging it after around 3 1/2 years, I remember because it was out of warranty. But Logitech didn't ask any questions and just replaced it with a new one. I'm still on the original battery which lasts a couple of months between charges. Logitech still provide replacement batteries for it even though it went end of life in about 2014.

Good design is nice.

Good functionality is lovely.

When the two meet and you get a piece of art, it becomes something far greater.

They need to make a version 2 of this thing!

Second hand, over 10 years later, people are still asking £150 quid for them:

IBM Model M £200.....

Know plenty of sysadmin/coders/BOFHs that have a stash of them, and you'd have to use a crowbar/hatchet to get them to relinquish them.

There's no design in that though.

All keyboards looked like that.

That's purely a functionality win.

True, but that's exactly what make it iconic to me. 100% Function over everything else.
Oh, yeah, not saying it isn't, just that it's not an art piece as in function + design.

It's no doubt a fantastic keyboard, but more for techies than the coffee table in the front room ;)

A lot of professional gamers still use those original mechanical keyboards as they swear they're more responsive than the stuff made today.

For me, it has to be the Apple Adjustable Keyboard, as it made me realise the awkward position I'd been holding my hands when typing before then...and let me put my A4 piece of paper between my arms and keyboard.

Once I broke that (about 4 years later) I couldn't get another, so moved on to the Apple Extended Pro keyboard...

When was that adjustable keyboard on the market? That's quite cool, not seen that before.

I do love Apples design.

1993/1994 I believe.

We used to rent Apple Macs for our design work, and I would have my own HDD that I carried with me between clients. This meant the Mac could just be sent back to the rental company without risking us leaving any confidential info on there, and it also meant we didn't have to pay the extortionate rental rates for the software (e.g. £100/month for Quark Express, Aldus Pagemaker, Aldus Persuasion, Informix Wingz, etc. on top of the £1000/month for the computer & monitor)...even though it was billed to the client, we still tried to mitigate the costs a little (so we could use the savings for wine & fine dining).

Anyone remember these monitors from about the same time period?

It's a bit strange that I've gone through the whole resolution & display technology cycle from 10" CRT monochrome 512x312 monitor built into a Mac SE, to a 32" Viewsonic CRT with a 4k equivalent resolution, then back down to a 720p LCD screen and finally back up to 4k & 5K LCDs/OLEDs.

Only taken 30 years! But I really don't miss having to lug a CRT monitor around the country/world by train/plane.

I loved the Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard when it first came out. I got it back in the late 90s or early 00s.

Had never seen anything like it before and after a few months of use it became completely natural to use and other keyboards felt off. My typing speed went through the roof.

This was the one...

Microsoft ripping off Apple designs again ;)
ISTR that at that time there were a number of 'ergonomic' keyboards about. It was the latest fad - that's probably why I bought one! I'd hate to speculate who was the first to market, it was a long time ago. I'd be surprised if Apple were the first though....

Apple are equally capable of 'gaining inspiration' from all sorts of companies and claiming it as their own - whether this is by simply copying or buying up a company is irrelevant.

Sometimes it actually helps the other company as it puts a spotlight on them. So a potential customer who doesn't want to pay the 'Apple tax' will then buy from the original company for less...but usually finds out the quality is a bit poor...although some Apple peripherals haven't been worth the premium for some time (pencil, magic mouse, magic keyboard, cables, adapters, etc.).

Second hand, over 10 years later, people are still asking £150 quid for them:

The Edge! Lovely keyboard. I’ve got through two of those, the first one died through overuse and I gave the second to my dad when I decided to go full Corsair on my recent system.

If I’d have known that people would pay that kind of money for it second hand I may have done things differently.

I had it paired up with a Logitech G700S mouse, another luxury acquisition as it was their best wireless one at the time. It was hefty but I loved it. So much so that it’s now my mouse at work.
