Switch 3080 to 3090 for a faster build?

just to add to my previous post, and the reason i worry ,the computer i am waiting on has cost me over 3 grand (i normally spend around 900) and i would not like to think it will be held to ransom by one poor quality ( in all meanings of the word) but vital component.
I received my second PCS machine on Christmas Eve after a 3 month wait, mine was also over the £3,000 mark.

7 years ago I got a Vortex IV laptop from PCS, that laptop is still going strong and now my younger brother has it for his school work plus gaming.

That laptop has never developed a fault, I’ve never had a computer last so long without something going wrong. Hence why I’ve come back for my desktop.

My desktop is also a lovely machine, well built and runs like a dream. I do not have cheap components in. I received a Gigabyte Vision OC 3080, I’ve got an £800 card for £690 (that’s how much it was on my configuration).

I’ve had no experience with Zotac, but Palit is a solid brand.

I completely agree with Gavras, those who tend to run into problems cheap out on other components just so they can get the top of the range CPUs and GPUs, but it’s an expensive road in the long run. Pre-built machines often suffer the same fate and they die within 3-4 years.

It’s unbelievable how many people spend thousands of £ on what are essentially toasters. Just pay that extra and get the right components to support your system.

Very well put, and fully agree on all points!

To be honest any 3080 is a blessing in these times id take a tesco basics if they sold 3080,s prob get some of it with club card ;)
It was definitely worth waiting for the 3080, I've come from the AMD Radeon HD 8970M from 2013 .

I didn't get the ASUS ROG STRIX that I'd hoped to get but still very happy with the Gigabyte and to be honest was a nice surprise when I removed in internal packaging.

same order date and estimated build date as me 😂. I removed my GPU yesterday after a retailer had 3070s in stock.

i am taking those emails with a grain of salt mind as I’ve had 3 before (1saying 24th dec and other 2 saying 28th dec)
have you received your build or are you still getting estimates?

i am left with a dilemma, do i cancel this order and join a new queue with another company who actually state that the card i buy is the one i will get, (and wait another six months (because of Nvidias recent statement)) or do i accept a Pallit, with its worse performance to the FE, the Zotec which is similar in performance but with more noise and no overclocking. These are the cheaper cards, does this mean poor quality components and will i just be buying a whole lot of proble
I've bought and used at least 20 GPUs in the last 20 years, not to mention other PC components from pretty much every manufacturer. It feels like what you are referencing above is based on what you've read on the internet. My most recent, long term card (2 years) was a Palit 2080 ti. It. was faultless and replaced the FE 2080 TI which lasted 24 hours and couldn't get through 5 seconds of Time Spy. You will find issues with every single RTX 30 series that has been sold in volume. Gigabyte - very cheap and faulty (to the point of danger) power connectors (apparently now fixed). eVGA - cards running considerably hotter than others. Asus (ROG and TUF) - coil whine. PNY, Gainward, Galax, KFA - these are all Palit cards. Zotac - All you need to do is flash the BIOS to the Gigabyte or Palit BIOS. It's quick and easy. If you're overclocking anyway, then why would you have a problem flashing the BIOS? I believe there was an issue with the Zotac RGB lighting that was fixed. Not sure about the noise side of things that you mention.

By the way, you can (at a premium but still a very fair market price) select an Asus card with PCSpecialist. Any new order with any company now now will likely reflect the c.15-20% price hike that's been announced on GPUs and, in some cases motherboards too. Something to consider.

Because, in order to maintain your warranty, you need PCS's permission to update your BIOS.
I would have thought that overclocking would also void your warranty, no? You would only want to flash your BIOS if you wanted to unlock the power limit to overclock.

i am pretty sure their are likely a multitude of reasons to flash your BIOS (after getting permission of course), such as memory compatibility etc.

Looks like the 3090 just went back into pre-order on the configurator. Not sure what that means for people who have already switched, but something to keep an eye on.
