But surely if they're able to check that when you click Proceed, they should be able to do it in real-time?

Possibly, but it would make the pages a lot slower, and be incredibly irritating to have to keep going backwards and forwards up- and down-grading items if you're playing around with the options?

It would not be slower as the data would already be in the client, so no loading data when selecting stuff (possible a minor increase in initial load times, but that'd be such a minor increase, and considering the fact that the configurator shouldn't be loaded repeatedly...).
You wouldn't have to go "keep going backwards and forwards", if you for example select a core i5 that doesn't support 1600MHz memory, those memory sticks
will simply disappear from the memory drop down, and if you had a incompatible memory selected already, it'd change(+prompt?) you about it.

This would in face decrease the need to navigate back and forth, as they'd be able to remove the "You've selected incompatible components"-page.

Edit: Thread seems generic enough, so hijacking it additionally:
An additional suggestion:
I think it might be cool to be able to link to configurations. So when you select components and play around,
a url is created like "http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers/PowerGlide-Performer?cpu=ACPUID&ram=ARAMID".
Giving the end user an extra button: "Copy link to this configuration".
I think this would be awesome, because then people could make a configuration,
send it to friends and ask for criticism, friend posts a improved configuration back... etc.

Alternatively a URL with the encoding by a number - there are only so many combinations, after all. Could also help in the forums, since everyone's so helpful with Spec evaluations you generally get a few competing builds but you still have to manually recreate it in the configurator.

OR, generate a unique ID for the spec, and the person who proposed it earns £1 credit towards their next build if someone goes through and purchases it (affiliate-style)

I had a similar idea but never got round to posting it, my idea was to do with the rep system we already have. However i think £1 towards the new spec would be far too much, i was thinking along the lines of 10p per rep point. That way you actualy encourage people to come back and help others with their builds and better more helpful forum. Perhaps limit the value of any discount to a set amount no matter how many rep points you have that way people can't get uber PC's for nothing but posting on a forum.

I think doing it on rep is actually more expensive - there's no cost to giving rep, and the system could easily be abused by people voting for each other, registering dummy accounts etc - possibly controllable by PCS, but requires additional effort.

If 750 people use your affiliate link then PCS owe you a £750 system (woo-hoo!) - but this seems pretty fair as it would mean they had sold 750 systems! The cost to PCS would essentially be a £1 discount per system converted from the forums. The expense is deferred until you acquired enough credit to actually buy something, which is a lot of sales. Now, the people buying the systems may have bought anyway, but the forums are valuable in providing relevant advice, and this could be an extra nudge towards purchasing?

And if the referrer built up £585 (your current rep) then the chances are that this could just mean that you'd up-spec your builds and treat it as bonus credit, ("well, I was going to spend £800, so now I can get a system worth £1,385 for the same price!). PCS could also specify a minimum cash charge / co-payment to put a brake on things if needed.

Rep would not really be a good way of doing it either, given that you get differing amounts of rep from different people.

For example if Joe Bloggs posted one post that I liked and I repped it, he would gain 20ish rep points.
Whereas if John Smith posted ten useful posts to new people in the forums and got a rep from each (where their rep only meant 1 pt each), he'd only end up with 10 rep points despite the fact he had been more helpful/useful.

So rep isn't that fair a system to use anyway.
Also I suspect it would lose PCS too much, they are already very competitive on their prices.

Yeah i see that, which is one of the reasons why i didn't bother posting it as an idea on it's own. I would love to see a system like this come in but i think it probably has too many problems. It might give people the impression that people are only 'helping' them so they can get a reward as opposed to how it is just now i guess.

Actually, I'd prefer them to give it to a neighbour, rather than take it back and have to rearrange delivery!

the reason behind my suggestion was because the DPD driver (andrew) gave it to a random builder that was working on the empty house next door! I was lucky it wasnt stolen!

That is just stupid and obviously shouldn't have happened. However your suggestion wouldn't be entirely helpful, for example I had mine delivered to work to make absolutely sure somebody would receive it, sure enough I was serving a customer when I saw it arrive, I would have been incredibly cheesed off if my driver had said "no it has to be received my the addressee I'm going to have to take it away".

On the other hand, maybe there should be an option to select if you mind it being delivered to a neighbor if you are not in, but I think that would be down to the courier, not PCS?

it's actually in the dpd's terms and conditions with pcs, not to give the parcel/package to anyone else other than the addressee.

Therefore with you changing delivery from your billing address to a delivery address (in this case your work address) you are still the addressee, this adheres to the terms and conditions, as the item is still being delivered to the correct address.

Yes, only saw your comment in the other thread just after - rock and a hard place I think. I know DPD say they can re-deliver to a neighbour or safe place, is there perhaps a way of providing such information up front to PCS, rather than it being only on the second attempt?

I don't think they are allow to deliver it to your neighbour, I think I read a thread about it regarding some issues they had with missing parcels.
