Suggestions for a replacement gfx card please

Hello there.

I've been buying from PCS for a long time now, but when I bought my last pc:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT Six Core CPU (4.5GHz/35MB CACHE/AM4)
ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 16GB)
8GB AMD RADEON™ RX 5700 XT - HDMI, DP - DX® 12
500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe
CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET

The rx5700 was supposed to be an interim solution until the market settled down. Now, I'm having some issues with it and would like to replace it but, I'll be honest, my "build a pc" hands on knowledge is still stuck in 2005.

So I'm asking for advice - basically, what can I simply slot into my machine and have work with no hardware alterations? I'd much prefer to go nvidea. I don't need to go ultra high end at this point, all the games I play, play just fine as is though I suppose it's time to join the raytrace crowd lol, but I'm guessing that's pretty standard by now.

Budget, no idea, probably up to about 700gbp, but less if possible.

Many thanks, and hope this is in the right forum

oh sorry, it's a Razer Raptor (165Hz) - 27 Inch, so not looking for 4k or anything like that. It's not the biggest or best monitor but, by god, the display is lovely and solid.

Ray tracing is only useful if you use it, and think it benefits the games you're playing (I played with it for a bit and have had it turned off since) and in some cases (depending on game/GPU/resolution) you may have to have DLSS on to get above 60FPS with it on.

I believe that's a 1440p 165hz screen, so the budget would stretch to a 4070 Super at around the £580 mark.

BTW, do you only have a single drive in your PC, or is some of the spec missing?

Here's a GamersNexus video for the 7700XT, but the charts have lots of other GPUs to compare against...including your 5700XT and the 4070 (the Super is faster of course). The same money would get you a 7800XT/7900GRE if you're just chasing FPS (ray tracing performance is not as good though).

Also linked to a DigitalTrends review, which has less GPUs, but goes into multiple resolutions with RT on/of, and has the 7800XT vs 4070 Super data in...

You should edit out your Windows key BTW.

...and it looks like it's a single SSD with a HDD for game installs & other files, or do you have a separate SSD for game installs?

Just the one ssd for windows and any ssd-required games, hdd for everything else

Depending on how large a game library you have, you may find it beneficial to put a 2nd m.2 SSD in there just for games, and keep the 512GB SSD for Windows, Apps, Game Launchers only.

I'm just looking for a graphics card, I don't need more space. I have a massive game library but it's not an issue or problem, it'll wait 'till me next build :) Currently I literally only have 1 game that needs an ssd.

Your issues may not be with the GPU, if you have games on the same drive as the OS, then things will get sluggish, give this a read for more detail

My issues are completely 100% with the gfc card, they are phyiscal and involve problems with the fans :D I've fixed them, it's all fine, I am literally using this as an excuse to finally change the card I never really wanted at the time, that's all it is.

I realise, and am thankful, for the depth of thinking here, but there is nothing at fault, no deeper hidden issue (for once!). I just want a new graphics card that my system can support without any additional hardware.

The min PSU for a 4070 super is 650w, but with transient spikes accounted for, that’s 1300w.

You’ll likely get away with the existing PSU bit if theres unexpected BSODs or unusual issues with games not loading, and odd freezing / glitching, it’s likely due to the PSU needing to be upgraded, just bear that in mind for very worst case scenario.

But is an RMx model which are some of thebest on the market so hopefully you’ll be fine, all depends on the GPU you get

ah very true, i've been through the "psu wasn't enough" path before, some years ago.

tbh I didnt expect people to be recommending the 40* series either. What sort of psu's are people putting in current day builds?

Depends on the GPU, but for a RTX4070/7800XT level and the transient spike issues, we're saying 1000W+ if it's an ATX2 PSU (RM, RMx), or 750W+ if it's an ATX3 PSU (RMe, RMx Shift, HXi, AXi).

You Have an old ATX 2 PSU, modern ones are ATX 3.

With modern GPUs there’s an issue with what’s called transient spikes where the GPU can draw up to double its TDP in minute spikes, literally for nano seconds.

On ATX 2, the rating of the PSU is its maximum, so if you have a 400w GPU and it suddenly pulls 800w on your 750w PSU, in best case you get weird behaviour with apps not running properly, in worst case, the system power just cuts out.

on ATX 3, they’ve factored this in, so a 750w PSU can deal with spikes up to double its rating, ie 1500w for short bursts

This is why it’s always worth getting advice, there’s lots on your build that could have been far better optimised at the outset without spending more money.

Thanks for the explaination.

I suppose the queston becomes, then, what gfx cards can co exist peacefully with my atx2 psu

For a modern card you’d be looking at a massive downgrade to fit something actually comfortably, the 5700xt would far more powerful.

Power draw on RTX cards and AMD cards from 6000 series once they implemented the new Rt cores and AI cores has HUGELY increased, basically doubled
