Stutters while playing a game

So my PC is about 5 years old but I've started getting stutters while playing games like Fortnite and Valorant, I have played these games for a while and they have only just started doing it and it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes its not bad sometimes it's very bad.

These are my specs, while playing games my cpu and gpu temp is sitting at about 40/50 celcius and here is a link to an example of what is happening, its not that bad in this clip: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zwsj7zfub2ijkcw/Fortnite 2021.06.18 - 22.35.47.02.DVR_Trim.mp4?dl=0

Okay so I have the 2 sticks of 4gb which came with the pc and I added 2 stick of 8gb, should I remove the 2 4gb or 2 8gb or get complete new ones? Also, I spoke to some pc tweakers on twitter to see if tweaking it would help, 1 guy said it would guarantee stop them but of course he’s going to say that as he wants money

try with the higher GB sticks first and see how it goes. Definitely mixing is bad idea

This is the pc I got from pc specialist except i have changed the hard drive for a samsung evo m.2 drive and i recently replaced the ram with brand new ram since I thought this might have been causing it so I got 16 GB of brand new corsair vengeance 3200MHz, the stutters stopped for a bit (about a day) but now they have returned. the stutters aren't all the time either, sometimes its fine but other times they are really bad, I don't know whats wrong so im thinking about getting a new PC altogether but wanted someone else opinion

What has changed then? If something was working and now it's not then something has changed.

What happened just before the problems started? Were there Windows Updates? Were there driver updates? Was it all ok before you installed the M.2 drive? What happened to trigger this issue??

Same question. What changed to cause the stutters to return? Something must have changed.

The bottom lines is; if the games run fine at times, or if they have run fine in the past, then there is nothing wrong with your PC. If the stutters happen sometimes then what else is running at the time? What is different about your PC when it stutters to when it doesn't?

The most useful and important bit of troubleshooting you can do is to establish exactly the circumstances under which it stutters. Is it when another specific bit of software is running for example? Is it always at the same time of the day? Is it the same when Ethernet connected as on Wi-Fi? Etc. etc.

Going out and buying stuff in the hope it might fix your problem is an expensive way to troubleshoot. Information is everything, so take the time and trouble to establish exactly how it fails.

I noticed that you had the Bullguard Antivirus 90 day trial when you bought the computer. Do you still have any antivirus software on the computer now? Also, you recently bought some new storage - I'm guessing because the old storage was either getting too full or you wanted to upgrade the speed (or both). Out of interest, how full is the drive that has your games on it?

EDIT: Posted at the same time as Martin in the comment above - seems like we had the same idea!

You may not have changed anything, but the system is always updating, you need to find what update caused the change.

Or it may be the lack of an update that's triggered it, are there any windows updates waiting to apply including optional ones?

You're saying that since November 2019 you have not installed any Windows Updates? Not installed any new software? Not updated any drivers? Not uninstalled any software? Not updated any software? Not plugged in any new hardware? Not unplugged any hardware? Never opened it up to clean it? .......

You need to go back to when these stutters started. What did you change then? Check your Windows Update history to see when updates were installed. Pay particular attention to driver updates.

As I've indicated you need to find out what changed before you got the stutters.

so if I don't know when they started first I'm pretty screwed then :/
It certainly makes it a lot harder to troubleshoot. There is no magic wand I'm afraid. If you have no idea what changed to cause these stutters then your next best course of action of a fully clean install of Windows to check that this isn't a hardware issue....
