Hi,

Can someone check over my son's spec for his new gaming pc, budget £1500 below please? He likes playing call of duty. He has a double monitor set up, 144hz and 60hz.

Additionally, as well, any pointers to a second pc for my other son (budget £1000 for playing fortnite) would be helpful (elder son contributing £500 so wants more spec).

I would recommend going over to a ryzen processor which have become significantly better than intel processors. This pc will run great with games your son will like to play and max settings.

For your other though son though I would recommend you try and stretch your budget to £1100 this will run game like fortnite at max setting and a lot of others. I have chosen a 750w rmx power supplies because it will give you and your son the ability to upgrade some of the components later on.

For 1080p gaming the 5700XT is massive overkill. The 2060 will be more than enough to play COD on high/ultra settings and still hit 120+ fps. You only need 16GB of RAM, 32GB is reserved for Simulator games such as MSFS 2020
If you want to bump it up to 1500, I would recommend one of 3 thing: Case upgrade to Fractal Define 7; add a 1TB PCS m.2 SSD; or add a H115i Platinum cooler.
This build should last 7-10 years with a couple of upgrades. I would recommend considering moving up to 1440p a few years down the line.

Thanks guys. One thing I forgot to mention is for the younger son. I don't have a monitor and he doesn't have space for a two screen set up so I guess I need to have a monitor that is quite big. I just measured his available space and it's 1m wide and 50cm height before the shelf kicks in. Is that possible within a now say £1100 budget, happy to downgrade spec if case looks the same as his elder brothers? Thank you for your help and the custom URLs

Sorry, another two questions. Elder son is fiddling with the budget. He says is the case so important as looking for extra cash within budget and what does the upgrading to 1440p mean?

Skimping on the case is false economy. Without good airflow and cooling, the performance will be throttled due to high temperatures. A cheap case may need extra fans, which may cost more than any savings on the case.

Out of stock for these two, any alternatives? The 8GB AMD RADEON RX5700 XT is in stock but smashes the budget now and may be overkill anyway as per Mr Wilson's comments.

So unfortunately the 2060 is out of stock until February, but the 1660ti is back in stock which will cover your son's gaming needs with his current monitors.
The 5600x is a highly sought after product due to it being the go-to CPU for multiple applications including gaming. PCS have listed it as pre-order as supplies for the latest generation product are in short supply due to covid-19 disruptions and increased demand. This means that PCS are constantly ordering 5600x stock in, but cannot guarantee that your build will be completed within their standard build time. You may be looking at a slightly longer wait than compared to other CPUs but most people on here will tell you it's worth the wait to get the quality product for your son's build.

There is a huge global shortage of components that are used among other things for Graphics cards, hence global shortage of cards.

Additionally this year has seen huge demands for PC’s and Laptops for people working from home.

For example, we (company) purchased an additional 10 laptops and 15 high end Dev workstations, and desks, chairs firewalls etc.

The lack of specific cards, then has everyone jumping at next similar spec card.

Cases have went in lead up to Christmas and other parts as well.


The volunteers on here will try to spec you a PC, that provides value for money and also that can be upgraded over a 10 year life span.


another vote for the Case being a very important part of the build, also a lot of cheaper cases come without all fans, these need budgeted for as well, sometimes easier going to a ‘fully fanned‘ up case.

Its always worth waiting for something that will bring pleasure over a long time.

Thanks for your replies guys, they are really helpful. So can someone help me then provide a spec to be 'good to go' (was supposed to be a xmas present so feeling bad now) for £1500 budget that I can upgrade later this year with a better CPU and graphics card? And also a spec for £1100 for my younger boy that includes a monitor that can take advantage of the space 1.0m wide by 50cm and also upgradeable if possible (second son only 3 years younger so may need more gaming power soon) ? Should I start a new thread?

Ok, so switched out GPU so this build is good to go for elder son. As discussed above this build will fulfill all gaming requirements. No need to upgrade the CPU for the forseeable future; the GPU is only worth upgrading when you're investing in some new 1440p monitors to pair it with.

As for younger son, from my personal opinion, I am afraid that I would not be able to spec out a PC and monitor with a £1100 budget.
It may be due to personal bias, but when I put together builds for people on the forums it has to be a build that I would be comfortable purchasing myself if I was in your shoes. Cutting down on components the cheapest I could pare the build down to was £1170, and you're looking at another £150-200 on top of that for a decent 1080p monitor. Going any cheaper is in my opinion, false economy, and I cannot personally recommend doing so.
If someone else on the forums can spec you out something for your younger son then that's fantastic, but personally I don't feel confident working within that budget.
