Spec for a productivity machine with a tiny bit of gaming

Hi All,
So I am looking to put together a machine that can cover the following:

Usage: General desktop duties, standard office stuff, bit of photo editing, bit of video editing, bit of 3d modeling using sketchup and fusion. Nothing complex, just knocking up some small items for 3d printing. I'd also like to mess about with docker, virtual machines etc. I imagine the video editing will be the most taxing. As far as gaming goes, not a lot, maybe play a bit of red dead redemption/assassin creed type stuff. I'd be looking at old back catalogue stuff rather than anything super new. But the game playing is really at the bottom of requirements.

Current Monitors: 2x 27inch Dell P2719H monitors 120x1080 50-75hz (run off a USB-C dock and old work laptops)
Contemplating upgrading these to a something ultra wide QHD 100hz refresh very soon, once I get some time for research ( the rabbit hole of selecting the machine components has taken its toll)

Budget: I like to stay below £2k (not including monitor upgrade)

Please pull this apart and make it whole as to be honest I've gone around in circles :) and I have no idea if this is balanced. I really don't care about RGB, but do like the look of the Fractal North cases.

Cheers,

Hi, my main concern with the above build is the GPU: the ARC B580 is an entry-level 1080p card that will work OK with your current 1080p display but will most likely struggle with an Ultrawide 1440p.
To stay within the £2000 budget (more or less), I'd suggest something similar, but first seek feedback from users who are more knowledgeable about productivity tasks than I am. :)

As above, the budget is the real limiting factor as you can't really get all the requirements well covered within the budget. PCs are incredibly expensive nowadays, ITRO 30-50% more than they were a couple of years back.

I would probably want to keep an 870E chipset in there, purely for the extra PCI-e lanes. How important is the firewire? It's quite an old technology so I would recommend moving over to USB if you can. If it's legacy hardware that you need to connect then that's fair enough but I would look to move on if you can.

I would possibly opt for an 8 core current gen CPU over the 12 core. Due to budgetary constraints but also considering most uses won't be overly core heavy. The Video rendering is when the multi-core would come into play but even an 8 core chip isn't going to be a slouch, it'll render a minimum of 1:1 (mine is faster than 1:1 and it's the 7800X3D which is a good bit slower than the 9700X). If funds become available down the line the CPU could be switched out with the 9950x if you wanted some proper throughput.

The GPU below is the absolute bear minimum that I would want. The 9070 would be a more ideal solution but it takes you further out of the budget. As you're playing legacy games and it's a low priority I would just dial the settings down and live with ITRO 60FPS. If the extra budget is there then swap it out with the 9070. You could opt for Nvidia to make use of the CUDA cores etc but I don't think you would see a huge benefit unless the video editing is fully fledged production work, at that level you would want a £3k+ PC in the mix though.

Thank you Ekans, Scott and Martin.
I think "ITRO 30-50% more than they were a couple of years back." is something I had not really appreciated. I haven't bought a desktop in 30 years....

Considering your feedback, I've reviewed my requirements and added some more details:
1) All of this is hobby, not work related, so no full fledged video production work, just years of family videos.
2) Firewire was for capturing a load of dv tapes from the original panasonic camera.
3) Let's forget about the gaming. I've not pushed the kids off the xbox in the last 4 years so I guess I can live without the games :). This is for my retirement and realistically I've got that may projects to do I'll not have time for playing games. If there are gaming capabilities that can be considered a happy accidental bi-product of meeting the other requirements.
4) Aim to last 10 years, I imagine my requirements will be getting less not more with time.

Forget the big monitor upgrade, put the budget to cpu, gpu and a 3rd 27" monitor for the extra screen real estate. (something like this https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/aoc...0hz-va-gaming-monitor-q27g3xmn-bk/version.asp)

Does that sound sensible? Taking your top upgrade recommendations bumps the budget to £2500 which I'll rob from the monitor budget.

How does this look? Thanks again.

Without the gaming requirement and with just editing family videos I think you're over-shooting by quite some way. The spec you have listed above is a production monster and a 1440p gaming monster as well.

That rig would really need a decent monitor for it to be considered worthwhile. I've video edited all of my own family flicks for years and I've continually had a mid-level processor without any qualms at all. My current CPU is the 7800X3D which is an 8 core gaming CPU but it is completely sound for any manner of editing that I could wish to do. I don't think you have any immediate need for the 9950X in honesty.

The long and short of it is that if you're going to push the boat out for the rig, you really need the usage to justify it. Otherwise it's wasting money and we never want anyone doing that.

Keeping the current monitor standard (1080p) below is what I would opt for. Again it really needs a little gaming to justify the expense on the GPU. It's not going to have any real chops for your usage outside of gaming.

I would remove the Firewire card, one of the cable converters to USB suggested would be a better solution for pulling old cam footage.

Removing gaming completely drops you to sub £1500. Also removing the firewire card would hit £1400.

You could lower the PSU to the 850w RMx, on the non-gaming offerings, without any issues at all (or even the RMe) but given the small outlay I would stick with the 1000w offering.

Scot that is super helpful. Thanks for talking me back to something that realistically meets my current needs. Too easy to "go big" when I don't know how "medium" performs.
Tending towards the integrated grfx option (non gaming), but how would I connect my current 2 screens? If that's doable then a GPU can come later if its needed at all.

Is it worth going back to the X870E motherboard now we are well under budget?

Cheers.

There are 2 ports on the motherboard for direct connection. HDMI and DP, as long as your monitors can take these connections then you can connect 2 screens no problem. If either of them are incompatible you can get cables that are, but you would be in the same position with a dedigated GPU anyway.

I wouldn't bother with the motherboard, it's more for when you're pushed for PCIe lanes, you're not going to need them.

Another option for the monitors is to use a display hub/dock.
