Sound issues on Recoil 17, no sound and crackling / high pitch

Hey folks.

Recently got the Recoil 17 and installed Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS. However, I'm getting some really odd sounds coming out of the laptop.

Sound doesn't really work, and it's difficult to explain but from time to time, there's a high-pitch sound coming out of the laptop, almost like an alien beep-boop kind-of-thing, even when there's jack headphones plugged in, it's coming out of the laptop, which makes me think it might be a hardware issue. I'm also finding some random crackling which I'm yet to determine if it could be software. I haven't used Windows too much but will try in the coming days.

Has anyone found any similar issues?

Haven't installed anything specific, but this is what lspci shows:

Not in this case. It should be built-in into the kernel, which I'm running 6.2.6-76060206-generic. Seems like it could be something to do with pipewire. Have you, or anyone else, heard the noise that I demonstrated? I'm open to trying some other distro if it's discarded it's hardware.

It's not an Intel soundcard though, Intel drivers are t going to work, you need to switch them to realtek

If you install windows you'll see it's a realtek driver applied. The Intel isn't going to work

Appreciate the response but this isn't a very actionable comment. I've found someone which might be running into a similar issue, however there's no mention of the high pitch issues I've found:

Bug #2018134 “[XMG PRO (E23), Realtek ALC1220, Speaker, Internal...” : Bugs : alsa-driver package : Ubuntu

In settings when selecting the built in audio the levels are moving and it thinks it's outputting sound, but nothing. Same results when using headphones or as a troubleshooting I attempted to use the hdmi audio out as well. Already tried reinstalling alsa and pulseaudio, to no effect. When...

PopOS is based on Ubuntu, the reporter has a XMG PRO (E23) which by the looks of it is the same chassis as the Recoil 17. Looks like no coincidence. Could anyone from PCS chime in perhaps?

That's a different issue, that's no sound at all.

It won't work on an Intel driver, plain and simple. If you can't install a realtek driver through POPOS, you'll need a different distribution.

Or test the audio in windows

But PCS explicitly state they don't support Linux.

I also have no sound, I've modified the main message to make that clearer. When trying to enable or use audio is when I get those weird sound artifacts. I think it could be the same issue.

Windows is fine so far.

It's a driver issue, plain and simple. If you can't install specific drivers in POPOS then you'd need a different distribution.

Intel drivers aren't gonna work

You could try installing https://www.sofproject.org/ - not sure how to do this on PopOS, should be easy enough to find out though.

Hi,

I am having the exact same issue with sound on Debian 12 Bookworm with my PC Specialist Recoil 16. The sound works fine in Windows, but I get the same crazy high-pitch squeals and pops in Debian. Did you manage to find a solution?

I tried to install the Realtek driver, however, for Linux, you need to compile it yourself. Unfortunately, the Linux driver only supports Linux kernel version 3.18 or earlier. The current kernel version for Debian Bookworm is 6.1. I tried to compile it anyway, but, as suspected, it was not possible.

I returned the laptop (found some incompetency on PCS' end here) and bought from another vendor.

No issues on Arch/Fedora and most importantly I'm not treated as if I don't understand a linux system. Good luck!
