Software Engineering and Gaming Build (~£3k Budget)

Hello!

I'm looking to buy a new PC that I intend to use both for my work as a Software Engineer and for casual gaming. I haven't really kept up with the hardware ecosystem, so I need a bit of a hand getting something suitable.

My budget is around £3000 with a bit of wiggle room if needed.

My work usually involves me running a couple of IDEs and spinning up a bunch of microservices/frontends and development environments in Docker, so lots of RAM and a solid CPU are vital.

Besides work, I also like to play a few games; some recent ones being WoW, Rocket League, FFXIV and Football Manager. None of these are particularly graphics-intesive but my game choices have been limited by my current machine, so I would like a decent GPU, too, so I can try some more modern games.

I use a dual-monitor setup when developing; my main monitor being an ASUS VG248QE (1920x1080 @144Hz) and my secondary one being a BenQ GL2450HM (1920x1080 @60Hz). The latter monitor is quite old now, so I will likely upgrade that to another 144Hz one in the relatively-near future. I am quite limited for desk space so probably won't look to get a 4k one.

I did see another post on the forums regarding a build for similar use, so I did base my initial build on this, which I have put at the end of this post.

There are two changes from the build in the other post:
  • I swapped the cooling from a Corsair H115i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler as this was out of stock.
  • I changed to an 850W PSU as the website suggested that 1000W was excessive.
I'm not 100% sure if my replacement cooler is still sufficient, or if I actually would need 1000W, so I'm happy to be corrected!

Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂

Cheers!

That is a beast of a build, The Ironwolf HDDs are meant for servers and are very noisy. If you need that much storage, I would go for 2x3TB Barracudas (the larger ones are only 5400 rpm). Ryzen likes fast RAM, so 3200MHz is really the minimum speed. I have changed the case to get a bigger cooler for the 5950X. I wonder if the 5900X would be enough for you. It would be slightly better for gaming and would only need a ROG STIX X570 motherboard, but you would need to add the AX200 for WiFi. I have removed the WiFi card from your build, as the motherboard already has this.

Thank you for the reply and the modifications you have made to the build!

I'm very happy with how that looks — I think I'm probably going to go for it 😀
