So sons PC has arrived and it’s lagging

Hi all. So I posted on here and got some advice about which PC to order for my son for Christmas and he’s absolutely over the moon and it’s made his year I think :) so thank you. However, he is saying it’s lagging lots when he’s gaming on different games so doesn’t see it’s linked to one game. Is there anything you can suggest which would help?. Here’s the spec that was recommended and ordered. I’m happy to buy something else that he might need to improve the performance or is it likely there’s an issue with the PC. I’m clueless with gaming and computers so any advice is appreciated . Many thanks :)

Hi -- glad he's so happy with it.

What do you mean by "lagging"? Do you mean he's getting poor framerates? ("Lagging" technically refers to problems with a network connection, but often it's used to refer to problems with framerates.) If so, it would be helpful to know what kind of games, and what visual preset/settings he's using.

Do you know which games does he play and on what settings? Some games are really demanding on highest settings.

As well as the above, ask him to download & install 3DMark. Once done, run the Firestrike benchmark, completely standard. When done, click on "compare" and post the link here for us to view the results.

Thank you all I will get him to download that 3D mark and post the result when he gets in from college. I’ve asked him and this is what he sent me, by text from his room as I barely see him now as he’s gaming non stop and living his best life with the new computer 😂

The games I play are league of legends, csgo, Fortnite and Valorant. The problem is with not being able to move at some point during a match and with fortnite I reached 200 ping. On csgo I was rubber banding back. I don’t know what settings I play on mum just default I think and I don’t know how to check what settings they are or how to change them. I’ve made sure the things are screwed in properly and I’ve changed the direction of them but it hasn’t helped. I don’t think it can be our internet as I don’t have the problem when I play on the Xbox.

As always any and all advice appreciated :) X

This sounds like internet issues and not problems with the machine itself, maybe spotty wifi in the area the PC is in?

the Antennae are very very sensitive it's definitely worth taking them on and off and bunch of times. Over tightening them can cause a bad signal and under tightening can do the same. It's worth messing with them more

I reached 200 ping.

Its probably worth using speedtest to check the speeds/ping on the PC when he's having said problems - he can use the https://www.speedtest.net/ site to check speeds
Would be worth checking the same thing on his phone at the same time in about the same place as the PC and compare results and see if there is a big difference and if not see if the results are good or bad - could be that the Xbox is in a good position for the wifi where the PC is not

You can also get an app for speedtest on both phones and from the windows store as well if an app is preferred over a website but both will work

From my own experience, WIFI speeds Vs Ethernet (cabled) connection differ alot. My BT service allows me to receive a whopping 900MB/s if I am hard wired in. When I have tested the wifi option it is greatly reduced to about 100MB/s. It does sound as if it is an internet signal issue. If you are able, try a Cat8 ethernet cable from the internet router into the ethernet port on the PC and run a speedtest vs wifi. The only other option would be perhaps to try a router extension plug?

Speed has no impact on latency, signal strength does.

It's worth testing the WiFi on PC and mobile as @Rakk says to identify if signal strength is the issue or of its driver related on the pc.

The good news is it appears to be the internet. That's a positive as it can be very easily fixed and can be done by yourself, so saves sending anything back.

Just as a test for your son. Ask him to play any game that isn't online, put it through its paces and see if there are any issues. My guess is that it will be a fairly flawless experience, anything more than the odd stutter would cause me concern.
