Should I just go Intel?

Seems there's no plans for a Clevo chassis with Ryzen so I'm a bit stuck as to what to get now. Been without a nice gaming laptop since returning my last 2070 TongFang Recoil. The only option for me here is Intel, which wouldn't be my first choice.

It would be mostly for gaming, but also light video editing and compiling (Level design, CPU intensive)

Would rather stick to PCSpec, but I'm also looking at a competitor that does offer Ryzen. Better screen + 300hz, Faster RAM, Ryzen 7 5800H and an RTX 3070 (130W).

I did ask about the TDP of the 3080 max q in the defiance and I was told it was 150W (Does this seem high to anyone else?). So obviously pros and cons to each. Also a decent £175 price difference.

Tigerlake is named 11th gen as Rocketlake but it's a totally different beast: different node process (10nm vs 14++++++++), different core (The Tigerlake's is one year improved vs the Icelake's which Rocketlake robbed and enlarged in 14+++++).

However Defiance because is Max-Q by no means is 150. It's a 105W (note the 0 placement). And not that true either. It's a 90W stock that, if the CPU is very low power using, can boost at +15W = 105W.
Max-P 3080 can go as high as 150W+15W = 165W (not in any PCS offering though, they are slighly lower, at 135+15 = 150W max).

Yeah it did sound a little high. I guess they were mistaken. With that TDP, I'll probably get better performance out of the 130W 3070.

If you're factoring in video editing then you definitely want AMD, there's no question. Just leagues better. The 5900HX would be the one to go for. Tiger Lake looks about the same as last gen AMD processors in multicore, with the 5900HX about 23% better than the 11375H. That's no small margin!

If it were only gaming and compiling then I'd say Intel would be just as good a choice.

Thanks for that chart, very useful. It is "just" a 5800h in the competitor PC. But if the TDP quoted by Macco is correct, I think gaming performance on the 3070 would also be better. Tricky. 105w 3080 max q vs 3070 130w.

Tbf when I am saying Tigerlake-H45 is coming 11 May I am saying the 8 core variant, so double the cores and lots of performance more than the flimsy Tigerlake released so far (e.g. 11375H). Those were for ultralaptops or thin gaming (proven useless). The new ones are for an entire new category, phasing out the last 10th gen. So same PL of the current offering, but better performance due to the new core arch + (finally!) 10nm node process.

We dont' actually know 100% how they perform against 5900HX but if you lurk at Geekbench website you'll find some 11800H (the lowest tier 8 core, there are 2 variants even better) performing somewhat better at single & multi core performance vs the 5900HX. It's only one single benchmark, but worth to suggest to wait 2 weeks and see, IMO.

First official leaks from what to expect the 11th of May Intel presentation.
(11400H is just the slowest of the exa-cores 10nm processor). There are 5 higher tier CPUs in the Tigerlake H45 line-up: one faster exa and four 8 cores.

NOTE:
Intel is using its sample system equipped with RTX 3060 Max-Q (65W) GPU versus ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 which packs RTX 3060 Max-Q with TDP at 80W.

My recommendation? Wait a 5-6 days more, before purchasing an Intel 10th or Zen3 laptop.

Another interesting slide came today with the Intel unveiling:

Notice the GPU of the Intel is at 155W, the GPU of the 5900HX is at 165W.

Again, we better wait the next 17th when the Benchmark embargo ends, but sit tight boys. PCS is already selling on pre-orders Tigerlake-H45 machines as of today.

Chinese does not wait the embargo to finish.

SOTTR on the lowest tier 8 core (the one sold at PCS) isn't bad at all. 134 FPS at the FullHD benchmark, while 5900HX got 125, but with a 3080.

In the same video (which I am not linking) CB23 gets the 5800H beaten by the 11800H in both single and multiscore (again, 11800H it's the lowest spec 8 core Tigerlake H45. After this there is 11900H and 11980HK).
