Sanity checking my config

Hey all,

Just made a quote, and would be happy if I could have some suggestions on what I might improve in it, while staying in the same price range.

My main requirements are:
1. Nvidia Gpu
2. Capable of great 1440p gaming
3. Ability to play half life Alyx
4. Upgradable in the future

My monitor: I have two 21" monitors that I got from work. They currently only go up to 1080p (unfortunately I don't have the model number at hand). I plan to upgrade these at some point in the future, keeping a dual monitor setup.
Uses: 1440p gaming; VR and deep learning applications
Budget: Up to 1500£ (~1800€).

I believe the config I got hits all of these, while staying under 2000€.

I wonder whether the default fans that come with the case+gpu and cpu coolers are enough? Is there any improvement to power supply or SSD that I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

If you could go through the following and update?

Whatever happens, don't order now as new CPUs and GPUs are being announced on January 6th with more power at the same price point.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have updated according to the post you linked. I hope the original post is alright now.

How long would it generally take between a new part being announced and it being available for purchase? Is there anything in particular I should be on the lookout for? I am wary that NVidia GPUs don't seem to be getting cheaper on generational upgrades

We don't know as they haven't been announced yet, could be a matter of a week, could be a month.

Not sure what you mean by generation upgrades not getting cheaper, that's not correct. If you mean same tier may be more expensive, that may well be true, but with generation upgrades the tiers are superseded, so we're expecting a 5060 will outperform a 4070 for instance.

The 4070 is an incredibly poor value card anyway as only has 12Gb VRAM which makes it a 1080p card (there are even some modern games that exceed 12Gb at 1080p).

The 5070 has been confirmed to be part of the initial batch of releases so will follow after the announcement.

But your budget isn't enough for 1440p anyway, at that budget you're looking at corners cut 1080p. For a comfortable 1080p build, you're looking at £1700 currently, for 1440p you're looking at around £2100

This is a bit surprising to read, what would your definition of "corners cut" be? I was honestly expecting an RTX4070 to be more than enough for 1080p gaming, and pretty decent at 1440p, given reviews such as these.

Point taken, will keep an eye out for announcements. Thank you!

Those reviews were on release 2 years ago, not relevant now, and at a point where Nvidia had full control over developers being limited in VRAM. Developers have largely stuck their fingers up to Nvidia since and are no longer sticking to Nvidia VRAM restrictions

At 1440p, you want a minimum of 16Gb VRAM to account for CURRENT requirements, let alone future requirements.

You can see from that video how many titles released since the 4070 was first released have now broken that 12Gb limitation. This is only going to be exacerbated now that fully path traced games are being released which is a new technology that has only recently been mastered by devs. Examples of full path tracing are games like Wukong: Black Myth, and you can see how bad that suffers even at 1080p on the 4070
