Hi,

I am looking to start from scratch. New computer. New monitor.

I am looking for a mid range machine, capable of playing pretty much any game on decent settings. My current computer lags so bad and freezes constantly. It is quite old now.

I think 1440 is roughly considered mid range so I have built with that in mind.

Mainly use the machine for general internet nonsense, gaming Fortnite/Sims/Warzone.

Looking forward to your opinions. Up to about 2k is my budget.

Hey,

I am looking at the below build.

I kind of understand that its mostly decent from reading through the guides however the cooling + power supply I have just selected randomly. I am finding it difficult to understand if these are suitable/too good/not good enough for the rest of the build.

I am going to be gaming on a 1440p monitor.

Cooler is fine for that CPU, although you don't need the extra thermal paste as the Corsair AIO comes with it's own pre-applied stuff.

You definitely want to remove Norton, as it's no better than Windows built-in offering, and the Windows version doesn't mess up your computer.

The PCS cases are not the best (build quality, quality of fans, unknown brand so no manuals available), so if you want included RGB fans then something like the Corsair 4000/5000, LianLi or Fractal Design will bel better options.

PSU is 'enough' for what you currently have, but it's the old ATX2.4 spec, so doesn't handle power spikes as gracefully as the newer ATX3.1 spec PSUs. Unfortunately the only lower power ATX3.1 PSU is the 750w RMe which is fine for the lower-end CPUs and GPUs, but I'd say you'd want higher than that...but the next ATX3.1 spec PSU is the 1200w RM Shift.

Finally, there's really no need for a super-fast secondary drive for gaming, so you could go for a larger, slower drive for about the same price (i.e. the 2TB Solidigm P41 Plus).

I honestly don't care about the RGB. I just want it to look professional and clean as it sits out on show in my living room.

Would that change your opinion on which case/cooler?

Just go for one of the non-RGB version of the 4000/5000 then, or go for RGB so that you get the fans, but just turn the lighting off (y)

I don't have a significant amount of knowledge of this space, but been asking some questions and doing some reading online. Trying to make good decision with my upcoming PC purchase. It will be my 2nd PC specialist gaming PC bought.

I have been looking for something to play games on 1440p on high settings.

There are obviously cards now available that will allow me to do 4k gaming, but one thing I have noticed is they sacrifice FPS.

For example, I could play a game on 1440p with 140fps VS playing a game in 4k with 50fps.

My question is - is the benefit of playing in 4k worth the large sacrifice in FPS? Unless you spend a boat ton of money it seems a lot of the 4k cards don't get a significant FPS when gaming. Where do we draw the line on when the sacrifice doesn't become worth the money?

50fps isn’t considered acceptable for gaming and that would give it no headroom for future proofing either, so would never be recommended.

For 4k you need an appropriate gpu, the 4080 or 4090, PCS don’t stock 4k gaming laptops

A 4080 would average just over 100fps in most titles, that’s around the ballpark.

Desktop GPUs and laptop are entirely different gpus, so a laptop 4090 is far less powerful than a desktop card.

It does depend on the game, if it’s flight sim for instance, that’s more like 30 - 60fps for playability.

4k wouldn’t deliver less, that’s the point, you pair the gpu to the resolution. So you wouldn’t have a 4080 for 1440p as most of the power would be wasted

Again, this is different on laptops as they can’t be upgraded so you fit as high a card as you can as that will be the first bottleneck

For a cooler, what would be the recommended one without paying a fortune for it.
Also, I have selected extra case fans. Are these required and are the basic PCS ones okay? They are the cheapest ones available and worried they are not good.

So what's the budget, also what's the monitor budget, without know what monitor is going on the end of it, it isn't possible to sort a spec, the whole lot has to balance, we can't advise on just one part

It's getting confusing, if you can stick to the same thread as it's all about the same build and it's really important to be able to see the history.

What's the max budget for the PC and the max budget for the monitor?

I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to coolers.

You’ll see a lot of low-end machines, and even some mid-range, with air coolers, but my question is always “why would you?” From an aesthetics point of view, you can’t beat an AIO, especially these days when they look so good.

As for choosing the right one, the honest answer is it depends on the chip. Intel chips run hotter than their AMD counterparts, so need bigger coolers.

I like the Corsair ones and certainly wouldn’t go any ‘lower’ than the ones PCS offer. And the main difference between the different models is the size. From the H60x (1 x 120mm fan) to the H150i (3 x 120mm)

Naturally, the higher end the chip, the better cooling you’ll need.
