RTX4090 Build

Running a 2018 PCS laptop and figuring I want to upgrade. Currently running on an LG CX but playing at 1440p and struggling to hit 60fps in newer titles.
I had a go at a build below. I have some knowledge but I'm by no means an expert so would appreciate any advice.
I want to wait for RDNA 3 to release but I'm impatient, I'd also love to wait for Zen 4 3D CPUs too but again, impatient.
I don't have a set budget but lower the cost the better really. I figured if I'm gaming at 4K, the 7700X will suffice.
My knowledge base around PSUs, coolers etc. is poor. I also have 2 fast m.2 SSDs and 1 SATA SSD I intend to repurpose for storage.

Thanks in advance :)

Godlike
A proper monster of a build here!
Only a couple of changes I would recommend. Your cooling is a little light, the H100x is an older model, for the latest gen CPUs I would recommend the H115i or H150i Capellix.
Also, for £5 on a £3500 build silver warranty is well worth it.

Thanks, really appreciate the advice!

I figure it will last a long time so may as well go for it

I would suggest dropping the additional paste, the corsair coolers come pre applied.

I would personally suggest a much higher tier case on something at this level, above £150 would be my suggestion as a baseline.

Personally, and at this budget the price factor isn't so much of a concern, I would push the PSU to the 1200W as a minimum, but if it were me, I'd go all out to the 1600W. I know that sounds extreme, but it's a minor budget increase to accomodate an area that we still don't know enough about with transient spikes on modern GPU's and increasingly on CPU's also.

It just protects you in the long terms, as it currently seems, CPU and GPU power levels are going through the roof, and it's worth giving yourself good headroom into the future for any upgrades.

With regards to the RTX 4090 over the upcoming RX7950xt, you're not going to miss out on anything with the 4090, but you'll definitely pay more. For an early adopters tax, if you're ok with the financial outlay, then it's not going to be a detriment to the build at all or longevity, it's a monster card.

Otherwise though, it's a monster build, will do you very well.

Just some further explanation of my reasoning as to why I'd suggest the 1600W for an old ATX2 PSU

According to the Gamers Nexus report above, transient spikes are seen up to 3 times the overall GPU power.

4090 Founders will draw up to 450W, aftermarkets are likely to draw more than this. But we'll take 450W as a baseline.

450W x 2 as a transient spike = 900W (just on the GPU)

Leaves you 300W for the rest of the build which should be fine. The 7700x draws about 200W under load. But at 1200W you're right near the peak of the PSU, which most people would be fine with, but I'm just ultra nerdy about this kind of thing.

Wow, thanks for highlighting this. Pretty crazy that a spike can double the wattage. Pretty eye opening stuff.

Appreciate the feedback. I may just hang on for AMD after all. Hopefully they can throw out a couple of 4K 60+ fps cards so there's something to compare against.

Thanks again! Patience may be beneficial for now

Sorry, corrected the above, I falsely stated transient spikes were 3 x, they're not, they're seen as 2 x but I'd still recommend 1600w with the 4090 personally (allbeit, I'm sure I'm in the minority here, just over cautious.)

Even so mate, you're talking 900w just for the gpu - It's crazy! Thanks again

No worries.

Just further on this, the new ATX 3 power supplies which are just being released are supposed to address this issue, but from what I've seen PCS don't currently have any available in the configurator.

Once those are readily available, we'll be able to go back to more normal wattage overheads.

Wow, the 4090 is priced at £1836 !! I suppose given that the scalpers are already charging £2300 on evilbay it's actually a bit of a bargain. World's gone mad...

Well, the £1600 price tag is for the founders, so aftermarket cards were always going to be more expensive

It's literally doubled the cost since the 1000 series in 2016, it's absolutely insane.
