RTX 5090 build advise

Hi there! I haven’t used this place in around 9 years since my last PC I purchased, though the time has now come that I have to get a new one. I’ve been using a GTX 1080 for a long time now, and my PC has struggled to play games for several years. Team Fortress 2 caused a blue screen in about 3 minutes xD

With Windows 10 dropping support in October, I don’t fancy being vulnerable to viruses as my specs are too outdated to get Windows 11. I’m also making the move to Linux (Bazzite in particular) as I have grown tired of Microsoft as a company and Windows as an OS. The Steam Deck has given me a small Linux experience for a while to know I’m happy to make the jump.


As for the PC I have in mind, these are the specs I’ve been looking at for when I hopefully have the funds by May.

GPU: RTX 5090

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

RAM: 64 GB

Motherboard: ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wi-Fi

Power Supply: 1000 watts.

SSD: SeaGate. 4TB or 8TB.

With the motherboard, I know basically nothing about this stuff. A video I watched suggested the one I’ve listed as it will support a 5090, but PC Specialist doesn’t seem to sell it. (I had no idea motherboards had Wi-Fi in them now!)

It also suggested a 1000 watt power supply is recommended for a 5090. Just hoping it won’t destroy the electric bill xD

The main goal with this rig I have in mind is for gaming with some occasional video editing for fun. I currently game on a 4K OLED TV with VRR. I believe 120hrz is the max it can do? Not 100% on that as when using my Steam Deck in docked mode, that’s the highest refresh rate option available.

My budget is somewhere in the 4 thousands range. I’m aiming for a rig that will be future proof for a long time. Also aiming for the Bazzite Linux distro as my main OS.

To those who actually understand this stuff, are these specs ok? Also, what motherboard would you suggest for a 5090? Any feedback would be super helpful :)

Making the jump to PC for gaming in the future is something I’m very excited about. Sony and Microsoft put their games on PC now, so I don’t see myself getting the future consoles apart from the Switch 2.

I wouldn't opt for a 5090 for your uses. The 5080 should be more than enough and save around £1000. I know you want future proof but that's impossible with GPUs as they change so often. Better to save the money and get the next generation GPU for similar money.

As much as I’d love to have the 5090, I suppose my TV wouldn’t get the best use out of it with its refresh rate. As long as a 5080 can play the grand majority of current games at the best settings with no compromises, then great!

So say the 6000 series happened in future, would I be able to change only the graphics card, or would multiple parts have to be changed for a new card in the far future? I’m terrified to mess with PC parts, but will try my best to learn in the future.

Because my current rig is so outdated, I have to go with a new PC from scratch, so I’m trying to understand this stuff as best as I can.

Sorry for the misunderstanding earlier.

The 5080 is far more suitable for a TV & your uses. You could maximise all the settings and you would bring the 5090 to its knees so it's all about having optimal settings. Setting the grass on a game to ultra HD, maximum rasterization just doesn't make sense. It's an often misunderstood magic.

In simple terms, the 5080 is the gaming GPU. The 5090 is a waste of money but people will waste such money in order to have it as it's the best. I hope that makes sense. I wouldn't recommend the 5090 at all, but if you wanted to pay for it in order to have the best then it's your choice.

The 6080 will plug straight into the PC above. You won't need to change a thing. It's highly likely that you'll get a number of generations out of it without having to worry too much about any other components.

If you got the 5080 just now and the 6080 down the line, you would most likely spend less money than just the 5090 now. That's even without selling on the 5080. You'll get new technology etc with the 6080 too, so it's a win win.

Fantastic! So this rig would be the most ideal. This is all very valuable information to me as someone who has missed gaming on PC so much. I’ll also be jumping into Linux rather than Windows having had some decent experience with it on a Steam Deck.

This recommended rig also means I’ll be able to afford this thing much earlier than expected, so that’s great!

I fell out of PC gaming years back as my rig was struggling to run games and still is. It crashes and reboots itself 5 minutes into running any game apart from Half-Life 2, haha. But now with console gaming in its current direction it’s going, I think now is the time to come back. It’ll be PC and Nintendo from here on, so this is all very exciting to me.

Again, I can’t thank you enough.
