RTX 3080 8gb vs 16gb - I am so confused

Hi all,

I am at the point where all though I don't strictly need to replace my laptop I am warming to the idea of doing so.

Going with the principle of "get the best that you can afford and it will last longer" my budget is around £1,600 - £1,700.

I was considering the 15" Recoil - with a 3070 - which I currently spec at £1,672 (full spec at the end of the post).
Upgrading this to the 3080 - increases the price by £200 and takes it out of budget.

However...

I have noticed that I can spec a near (to my untrained eye), identical Proteus with a 3080 for £1,700. (again, full spec at the end of the post)

At first glance £28 extra for the 3080 seemed a no-brainer, however I have since noticed that the Proteus 3080 is an 8GB version, whilst the 3080 on the Recoil is 16GB.

I don't think this is the Max-Q version, as other laptops using the Max-Q versions specifically state this.

I've tried to understand the impact of using the 8GB vs 16GB version by googling comparisons but if I'm honest, don't really understand the pages that come up. I think that the 8 and 16 refer to the dedicated RAM on the card and that the drop from 16 to 8 is likely to result in a few (3 to 5) fewer fps on top end games. If this is the only difference then that doesn't seem like something that I am going to notice and so the Proteus appears to be a great deal.

Even if the performance impact is more than just a couple of fps I assume that an 8GB 3080 is still going to be a significant upgrade on an 8GB 3070?

There don't appear to be any Proteus scores on the benchmark thread yet.

My head hurts...

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

We love you Ukraine
Can I just ask what your current laptop is?

Why is it you're looking to upgrade? What performance isn't meeting where it should do?

I have a 5 year old Defiance.

I can run most things that I want to (Cyber Punk, BG3), on medium settings but I think that I have an issue with either the graphics card or the screen, which causes me intermittent issues with the display.

Hard to tell mate but that looks like it could be a damaged screen to me, you weren't picking the laptop up by the screen by any chance?

Most times I see something like this it's generally from someone grabbing their screen to lift their laptop causing it

There are some cracks in the corner of the screen - I've updated the thread that I posted about it a while back.

It is an annoying but intermittent problem

Well you have gone and opened a whole can of worms here. First of all you need to find out from PCS what TGP + Dynamic Boost these cards can both be configured too (not what they configure it too but what the Control Center software allows you to configure it up too).

If they are both max TGP + DB (I am 99% sure the Recoil is but I would have to have a look through the forum) then the 3070 will be running at 125W or 140W with Dynamic Boost, with a max boost frequency of 1,620MHz.

The 3080 on the other hand will be running at 150W+ with 15W Dynamic Boost added. I say 150W+ because with the 3080 Nvidia allow laptop manufacturers to go above that if their cooling can handle it. So if the Protheus is set to 150W it will max out at 165W with Dyanmic boost. Now Nvidia say at that setting the laptop will boost up to 1710Mhz however my Valeon runs at 1800Mhz as configured by Tong Fang.

So with all that being said as long as the two cards are configured to their max TGP respectively then the 3080 will perform better, and the Protheus has a much thicker chassis so could well perform better with lower temperatures.

However if the Prometheus is set to one of the other TGP limits defined by Nvidia it could perform worse than the 3070. This is because it can be configured for anywhere between 80 and 150W.

Apart from that obviously the 3080 will have more tensor cores etc.

More info here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3080-Mobile-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.497450.0.html

and here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-RTX-3070-Mobile-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.497451.0.html

So that was basically a really long winded way of saying speak to PCS and find out what the respective laptops TGP's have been configured too.

Finally I would like to take the liberty of throwing this suggestion into the mix. I have the 3080 version and it can be configured to max TGP. I cannot recommend this laptop highly enough.
