RTX 3070, 3080 or 3090?

Amended my order a few days ago, but I've been seeing that the RTX 3090 has a shorter waiting time than the 3080.
I'm considering upgrading in hopes of cutting out a potential 4 month wait.
Any recommendations on what if anything needs changing to my specs to accommodate for this?

Hi there, this looks like a pretty solid build to me! For the 3080, the RMx 850W PSU is all you need, but if you decide to go ahead and change to the 3090, I'd keep the 1000W unit.

What will you be using this build for and what monitors are you using? Depending on those factors, there's a potential you could move down to the 3070 instead which would save you the time and money! Once we know that we'll be able to assist more. Also, the link at the bottom of the 'post your build to forum' is super useful.

I'm using it mostly for gaming but I've got some pretty intensive computational chemistry work to run on it too.

At the minute I've got a Dell S2721DGF, but may look to upgrade when decent 4k high refresh monitors become more available.

I ordered this just over 2 weeks ago, but I've been seeing that the RTX 3090 and 3070 have a shorter waiting time than the 3080.

I'm considering changing from the 3080 in hopes of cutting out a potential 4 month wait (willing to pay the extra for the 3090).

This will be used mostly for gaming but with some intensive computational chemistry work too. Using a Dell S2721DGF monitor (1440p, 165Hz) but may look to upgrade soonish.

Any recommendations on what, if anything, needs changing to my specs to accommodate for this?

For the gaming side of your uses, the 3070 would be perfectly adequate. We'd normally recommend a 3070 to top out a 1440p 144hz monitor so I'm sure it'd have no problem managing a 1440p 165hz monitor. That said, depending on how soon you think you might look to change your monitor it might be worth taking the plunge for the 3090 now. We'd normally recommend taking the upgrade if your monitor upgrade is less than about 6-9 months away. If it's more than that, then we'd recommend taking the GPU you need now and upgrading both monitor and GPU down the line.

That said, I'm not too clued up on computational chemistry. Honestly, I'm not even sure what it is 😂 So, I wouldn't want to advise a spec for it as I'm not too sure what it requires. It might be worth waiting for some of the super gurus to have their input on what they'd suggest.

The monitor is brand new so it probably will be more beneficial getting the 3070 rather than spending another grand on the 3090.

The chemistry work isn't too graphically challenging but it does eat up a bunch of time to run calculations, which I'm hoping this new build solves 🤣

Would a mod be able to merge Jallison's threads together? It'll make it easier for other users to see the spec discussion process and what's been discussed/ recommended!

Just made the following adjustments as I've opted to go with the 3070 strix and fancied some rgb fans on my case too 😅 also changed the PSU too:

Change to [CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET] from [CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET]

Change to [CORSAIR OBSIDIAN SERIES™ 500D SE CASE] from [BE QUIET! BASE 601 TOWER GAMING CASE]

Change to [8GB ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 3070 - HDMI, DP] from [10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 - HDMI, DP]

PSU and case changes look good!

With the Graphics card, swapping to a STRIX model might not shorten your wait. As PCS needs to get a specific card, it’ll be harder to source instead of any card they can get their hands on. The STRIX cards seem to be non existent right now, and they actually aren’t allowing purchases of any of the STRIX cards on the configurator at the moment. I’d swap to the standard 3070 to save the money and time! I think there was a customer on the PCS Discord that got a 3070 into build in just 9 working days. How I’m not quite so sure, but that’s one heck of a quick wait!

Smashing I'll get that sorted now 👍
