Restoring RAID - HELP!?

Hi

I need help re-installing a RAID 1 mirrored drive/re-installing a volume.

I had a RAID 1 set up on my PC, 2 mirrored 'data' disks (as well as an SSD boot).
One drive failed, and I've inserted the replacement: however I'm stuck as to how to re-install the Volume!
- At the moment the replacement drive is not accessible, nor is it part of the RAID/Volume set up.
- Neither of my 2 mirrored drives are accessible/do not show up in 'My Computer'.

- I paid PCS to set up RAID when I bought the system (a few weeks back), as I haven't a clue how to go about setting it up: so

Here's an image from the Intel Matrix Storage Console, if it's of any use!?

Any help would be greatly received!

Well, that's a very kind offer - but I was kind of hoping someone could explain what to do, or give me a link to an 'idiot safe' guide so I could understand/have a go at it myself.
- That or have PCS staff take a look (I did pay for them to set up RAID on my system) as I have also paid extra for extended support!

That and the fact that, respectfully - and please don't take offence - but I don't know you from Adam and as you can surely understand, simply handing over my computer to an unknown (I see you've just joined) not a particularly good idea regards security. :-S

Yep, of course, I understand completely. Your welcome to a reference from Tom ( ive been on his PC all day setting up his folding )

However Im not familiar with the raid controller you have there, and would need to look about to make sure your getting the correct settings.

Without looking at the menu's I would not be able to tell you exactly how to start the array rebuilding. And id hate to give you some bad menu option or setting and kill your raid :(

Additionally there is a single key termination on Teamviewer and of course you can see everything im doing :D

The offer is there if you would like it. Sorry I cant be more help without a closer look.

Its possible someone using your raid controller could blind control you.

I do appreciate the offer - I'll first off wait to hear back from PCS support as to what they recommend I do - but I may come back to you :)

Hi - Any PCS staff have any links, or able to offer help regards restoring RAID? (I have emailed - awaiting reply).

I ask as I paid for RAID to be set up, and for extended support/cover - and as PCS set the RAID up for me they might know!?

:)

Bohemian - is the drive that you replaced the same make and model as the original drive? Have you tried to call us for advice over the phone yet?

Yes, I've replaced the drive with exactly the same make/model HDD. Caviar Green 1.0TB 64MB Cache.
- One thing I noticed when viewing spec in the Intel Storage console, and the only conceivable difference: the firmware is newer on the replacement disk (9.x on new, 7.x on old - I 'think'). Would this matter?

I've sent a few emails to PCS, some I attached screen shots and a report from Intel's Console.
- I can't call at the moment, private calls are banned at the moment (huge deadlines looming), and your offices are closed when I'm free - If the lines are clear at lunchtime I'll try to give PCS a call.

RE emails: I've had one reply so far:
"Have you clicked to rebuild the RAID in the intel storage manager in Windows? Generally, this will rebuild the RAID for you."
- There is no option anywhere I can see that offers me the chance to rebuild. I've clicked/viewed/right-clicked every menu/option/component - and trawled through the Intel help. None of the rebuild/recover options appear to work, simply as the options they suggest I select are not there/available.

Ok - I understand. I really would recommend a call to us at some point though, even if it has to be at the weekend. I'm not familiar with the Matric Storage Console version you have installed.

Things to check (based on looking at the screenshot you attached):

1. Right click on the non-RAID drive - do you have any option to "add to RAID array"?
2. Have you checked the options under "File" or "Actions"?
3. Right click on the "Missing hard drive" - do you have any options here?

Sorry I can't help you any further here...

Is PCS open on a weekend??? If so then I'll definitely call then if I've not been able to during the week - but I didn't think they were!? Doh!

1. Non RAID drive - I know there is not an option to "add to RAID array". I think the only option offered was to "Mark as spare"!?

2. I have looked under all files/menus - including Files and Actions. There is nothing there alluding to adding to array/rebuilding etc.
- Only option I think there was, somewhere - I think right-clicking on the "Volume" label in the explorer-type view of the drives - was to delete volume/array.
Reading through help files I understand this to wipe all data, and essentially mean I have to start over. - I want to know how to recover the data on the drive!

3. Missing hard-drive. There are no options to select that do anything. Only an "OK" or something equally meaningless, and it doesn't do anything.
- The new drive is listed under non-RAID drives. Only actionable option on that is to "mark as spare". Whatever that means.

The console produces a report - Here are the 'highlights' (missed off optical drives and spare ports):

As you are operating the hard drive from within your operating system, I can't see how deleting and re-creating the RAID array will destroy all your data. However, I wouldn't advice you do anything without speaking to our call centre first.

there is a big difference between RECREATING yrou array, and REBUILDING your array.

Please dont loose your drives :(

My offer still stands to jump on and take a look for you. But im sure PCS will mail you back soon.

I had Intel matrix storage system on a previous computer - go to the Intel web site of which you will find detailed instructions for repairing raid after one of the drives has failed.

update - just found this on the intel matrix console reference doc (Jan 10 edition)

How do I rebuild a degraded RAID volume after a failed drive is
replaced?

After replacing a failed hard drive from a redundant RAID volume (RAID 1/5/10), use the following
steps to rebuild the volume.

1. Power on the system.
2. Click Start.
3. Click All Programs.
4. Click Intel® Matrix Storage Manager.
5. Click Intel® Matrix Storage Console.
6. Click on the View menu and select Advanced Mode.
7. Right-click on the non-RAID hard drive in the device tree and select Rebuild to this Hard
Drive.

DSN - I've still not touched any settings, and won't until I understand fully.
I may indeed get back to you, but still awaiting advice from PCS :)
