Re: Recoil 16/17 gaming laptops concerns/questions

Morning everyone,

I'm possibly interested in getting one of the recoil gaming laptops as an upgrade to my now nearly 4 year old system but on investigation several concerns have got my not sure if I want to buy yet and hope hat you guys can help clear things up.

In regards to the intel core I9 14900HX processor there is a lot of debate around the degrading issue that is possibly present (some say it's only the desktop version affected and others say this is too), my question around this is I am wanting to know if anyone has bought any of these laptops (specifically with the rtx 4090 in case this will affect the load of the system) and ran into any issues with regards to game/system crashes, system instability and out right failure?

Also if so has anyone found a work around without loosing too much performance to stabilize it so the system will last (only thing I can of the top of my head think of is limiting the maximum processor state in the advanced power settings to a lower number) unless PCS have already done something to make sure that if this is actually an issue that it does not happen with their systems.

I'm worried about the idea of spending 3K on a new system that might not last a year under heavy gaming conditions due to the rumoured issue and from what I have read up to now there is no definite answer to if this is a problem or a "software rather than hardware" and more importantly if there is a solution for mighty worriers like myself (other than go to AMD as PCS don't have many good options for laptops in this respect) that it would never become a problem but still give near top performance?

Also a random question regarding the water cooler, does it get supplied with e bottle of distilled water for it or do you have to get that yourself? seems a bit steep a price for what is inside the cooler (watched a video on YouTube where they took one apart to see what is inside) for it not to come with a 500ml bottle with the kit.

kind Regards
David

I wouldn't buy anything now, these are at the end of the sales cycle, new chassis are just being announced now for release in March and both GPU and CPU are set to be big improvements.

PCS do stock AMD chassis, but they're very popular and in shorter supply, so normally have sold out by May or so.

Thank you for the quick response and solved the concerns in one go :), I'll hold off for the time being an see what springs up after March, gives me some time to save extra for a better system also.

The upcoming CPU and GPU updates are not only going to be good for performance but also efficiency and thermals. I'd definitely be looking for an AMD chassis with NVidia GPU, think they're going to be quite special

APUs aren’t really oriented for gaming, it’s more for professional applications.

You’d still want a dgpu for gaming
True but AMD are promoting the Max+395 as being good for gaming. I think if you're staying on the laptop screen it probably is for all but the most demanding games but yes, if you're using an external monitor you'll want higher end dGPU as the iGPU in this case is supposed to be equivalent to a mid-range dGPU.

Time and real-world reviews will (or will not) confirm this.

The recoil is a top end dtr serving a 1440p screen. Not even a remote hop in hell 60 tier igpu could make even the slightest dent at 1440p, that’s even if a mobile dGPU equated anything like a desktop dGPU which it won’t

The recoil is a 70 tier at the lowest.

I wasn't referencing the Recoil specifically. The new AMD CPU would go very well in a more budget gaming device.

The recoil is a beast of a device (very happy with mine) and I'm interested to see what TongFang and specifically PCS's implementation offers for the Recoil range in 2025.
