True. I ran the benchmark from Farcry 5 and it seemed fine at 125 fps in ultra settings.
That sounds pretty hopeful.

A good stress test is furmark, that's an abnormal GPU load and purely targets the GPU. If you have any problems with that, then you know your GPU has issues.

Better than that, I've since spent 4hrs playing Elite Dangerous in VR at my normal setting i.e. as high as possible for the 1080Ti, also I didn't think at the time but the card is overclocked using the MSI software and I hadn't disabled that either...

I guess in future I'll be checking the board seating on a regular basis.

All it takes is a tiny bit of grit or dust holding one of the pins off the card connector.....
