Please recommend a desktop build

Hello, I would greatly appreciate any help with configuring my next desktop computer please!

USAGE REQUIREMENTS
  • - Work (heavy Chrome / GDrive usage + occasional Adobe Suite)
  • - Virtual machines (may need high RAM and fast SSD)
  • - Gaming at 1440p (mostly RPGs but some FPS like Halo etc)
I'll regularly be using this PC for up to 16 hours each day. I'm keen to have good quality and reliable components, and for the system to run cool and very quiet.
I don't require RGB or a windowed case.

CONSIDERATIONS

I'll need a PC and a new monitor too.

Ideally I'd like to have a newly released Ryzen 5000 series CPU and a RTX 3070. If this won't fit within budget I'd be willing to wait for the RTX 3060. I'd be OK with using a cheap placeholder GPU in the meantime and upgrade it after a few months.

For the monitor I guess 4k is not budget-realistic, so i'm probably looking at something like a 27" 2560x1440p display.

BUDGET

I was hoping to spend about £1,350 for the PC... and spend up to £300 extra on a monitor (~£1,650 total budget).

If £1,350 is not enough, or if you think a more expensive build will be worth it, i'm willing to spend up to £1,500 or so on just the PC.
I'll probably be able to pick up a cheap monitor on Black Friday for like £200.

Please let me know if you need more information. Sorry if my budget is confusing... I just wanted to show that it is a bit flexible (within reason).

Also, I'd be happy to send someone a few quid for a beer for taking the time to help me out if I go through with the order :)

Many thanks!

RAM requirements depends on how many VMs you plan to run....my understanding is 4GB RAM is advised per VM so the above spec would give you up to 8...unless the VMs you use require more.

Only area I am unsure of is the cooler on the 5600x....while the cooler it comes with is a decent fan, not sure how it will manage with the chip.
Thanks, Nursemorph.

- I've checked the VM requirements and it's suggested 32GB for power users .. which I don't classify as. So i'll lower that to 16GB.
- The case you linked has a window. I'd prefer it without.... any alternative cases? Maybe the Corsair Carbide Series 275Q Quiet?
- Regarding cooling, would you lean toward a non-stock cooler then just to be sure? If so what might you go for? Noctua NH-U14S?

How many VM guests do you want to support concurrently? What is the minimum RAM requirement for each of these guest VMs? You want to leave at least 8GB for your Windows host so you need as much additional RAM as your total concurrent guest VMs need. For example, with 16GB you can run two guests with 4GB each or 4 guests with 2GB each.....

Hi - 16GB will meet the usage requirements. The actual minimum RAM requirement is low, I just wanted to be on the safe side. I won't be running that many VMs. I can always upgrade memory later if needed.

Any opinions on the build above? I've changed the case and included a CPU cooler and lowered RAM. Any issues?

That case isn't very good for airflow which you want given you are putting in a quite powerful GPU. The problem is the only good case without a side window is the Define 7 Quiet, which is nearly £100 more. Alternative is to find a non-Windowed case and have it sent to PCS

Cooler: May be a prudent choice to go with a 3rd party cooler. Personally I wouldn't go with the Noctua as I prefer liquid cooling...the Coolermaster Lite 240 would be a good shout and cheaper

That's really helpful, thanks. I'll go check that out in the configurator and see how costs go
