When I turn on my Windows 10 machine, before it boots to the TUF Gaming splash screen and allows me to login to my desktop, the error: "Please enter setup to recover BIOS setting" was shown.

When I enter the BIOS, the settings are reset to 'default' and both the date and time is incorrect. When I change the date/time and the settings to what they should be, I save to them using F10. The machine then restarts and boots normally to Windows 10.

My machine is 4 years old and I have changed the CMOS battery. This worked once when the machine was turned off by shutting the machine down, and flicking the power supply rocker switch, the BIOS settings that had been saved and battery did work. But since I have turned the machine back on the same error message is shown at boot.

The CR2032 battery brand that I had purchased as a replacement is the Duracell CR2032 4-pack.

If this is the CMOS backup battery, which brand would be a good choice to buy? I have also looked at Energizer and Varta.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Duracell are decent, but make sure you get them from somewhere reliable, believe it or not, there are a lot of fakes on Amazon and other places.

Are there any place(s) that you might suggest to buy from because I purchased these Duracell CR2032 4-pack from Argos.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Argos should be ok, they're official.

If you want an industry grade battery, then there's actually ProCell which is what all the professionals use in corporate environments, they really are worth it, and not a lot more expensive

That’s very true, a proper battery merchant is Farnell, used to use them when I was working for a company building hardware, they’re reliable and I still buy specialist fuses from them for my audio equipment

Hi,

I still have a hardware problem with my machine relating to the BIOS. The CMOS backup battery holder has broken off the motherboard, meaning the BIOS settings cannot be saved.

Unfortunately, this also means that I cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to the TPM 2.0 in the BIOS needing to be set to ‘Firmware TPM’ instead of 'Discrete TPM'.

I have contacted PC Specialist and they have advised me that to resolve this problem, the motherboard will need to be replaced.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

What do you mean by this, can you upload a photo? I've never known anyone to be able to damage a CMOS holder before, they're pretty substantially incorporated into the PCB

What advice are you looking for? PCS have given a clear resolution, if you've damaged the CMOS battery holder, the only option is to have the board replaced?

The CMOS backup battery holder is intact itself, but has broken off of the motherboard. I have attached photos.

I have telephoned PC Specialist for clarification, pertaining to requesting an RMA to have the motherboard replaced.

The 2 main options that I have been given by them are the following:

1.They will try to source the exact same motherboard that I currently have - ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING.

2.They have suggested that the B550 chipset AM4 motherboards, which are a lower chipset than the X570, are a option that would be compatible with my system if they cannot source a X570-Plus.

I have not booked an RMA yet because PC Specialist would need to look at my desktop PC first before they would be able to confirm what the problem is and if they would be okay to do it at their discretion.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

I’m not sure what you’re looking for from us? Were not connected with PCS in anyway, sounds like they’re dealing with it, but there’s nothing they can do until you start the RMA

Hi,

Is there a noticeable performance difference between the X570 motherboard that I currently have and the below B550 chipset motherboard.

The X570 chipset is a higher-end chipset than the more mid-range B550 chipset.

Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi II.
1 x M.2 port (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 & SATA modes), 1 x M.2 port (supports PCIe 3.0 x4 & SATA modes).

My existing motherboard is Asus TUF X570-Plus Gaming.
1 x M.2 port (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 & SATA modes), 1 x M.2 port (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 & SATA modes).

My Questions:

Is there any noticeable difference between the M2 PCIe 3.0 x4 and PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds? I am asking this because if I decided to add another M2 SSD to my system, would this affect loading times for games etc.

Should I double my RAM from 16GB to 32GB? The RAM would be the same speed 3200Mhz. In a 2 x 16GB memory sticks. I currently have 2 x 8GB sticks.

The problem that I currently have is that I cannot save the BIOS settings. To be able to install Windows 11, I have previously asked PC Specialist if I could update the BIOS on my existing motherboard to set the TPM 2.0 to ‘Firmware TPM’ instead of ‘Discrete TPM’ in the BIOS by default. This is possible and would mean that I could install Windows 11.

If I have the motherboard replaced with the B550 chipset motherboard, I would prefer to retain my M2 SSD with its heatsink installed, as it is (shown in the first photo attached in post #9), this would mean that it might have to be installed in the lower M2 SSD slot, which is I think PCIe 3.0 x4, so will run at a slower speed.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. please

Thank you.

RMA Update:

My desktop PC was collected by DPD yesterday and has been delivered to PC Specialist today.

Should I have another M2 SSD installed into the replacement motherboard, for either my game installs or just for Windows and apps?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Are there any particular brands, that I should go for? I have looked at the following M2 SSDs in particular.

Samsung 980 Pro
Samsung 990 Evo
Samsung 990 Pro
Solidigm P44 Pro

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.
