Photo library / processing and a little gaming perhaps...

Thats good then as I was getting confused so now I know its not just me.

I also looked at the printed manual that came with it and got confused - pics you had above etc.

I have chosen to edit my RMA with an additional request for a quote for 2 x - if it will take them - then they can let me know LOL and 1 x if it doesnt take them :D :D

Thanks @SpyderTracks

Sorry I couldn't be more help, I started out feeling quite confident and then just got swallowed up in the blackness

I spent 2 days trying to work out that channel bifurcation page when I first got my Hyper-X card...as I couldn't fathom why it said I could use 4 m.2 in it and I could only see 2 or 3 depending on what lanes I assigned in BIOS.

Then realised that it was a motherboard/chipset limitation that meant it didn't have enough total PCIe lanes to cover all the m.2s

...and to reinforce what ST said, the blurb on the product page even says...

Thanks Tony. I think.

I’m quite confused now but basically I can have 3 not 4? But if I have 3 it affects the speed of one of the other ones?

Sorry, ignore me whilst I correct my posts - as I had the wrong manual/page open.

No, you can only have 3 m.2 NVMe drives natively - 2 provided by the CPU (1 x PCIe5.0x4, 1 x PCIe4.0x4) and 1 by the chipset (PCIe4.0x4).

If you use the 3rd m.2 slot then the PCIeX16_2 slot will be disabled (which might normally be used for another add-in card for network, audio, etc.).

You could add more SSD storage using the SATA connections for slower SSDs.

The final option may be ignore the 3rd M.2 slot and add an Asus Hyper-X G4 (PCIe4) or G5 (PCIe5) card into the now not-disabled PCIe4x16_2 slot...which in theory should support 2 more gen4 m.2 SSDs (according to that confusing Asus bifurcation table) or get a more basic add-in card to fit a single m.2 to.

The way I'm reading it the maximum you can ever have is 3. Even with the PCIe add-in card it states 1 drive for the PCIe16_2 slot (Presuming B650 TUF Wifi). The PCIe16_1 slot would take 4, but you wouldn't have a GPU.

Just a heads up, if you opt for the 4x16GB you'll reduce the performance of the RAM quite significantly without going in and manually tweaking the OC profile of the RAM.

Thanks Scott. Tried the 4 x RAM and am now returning 2 sticks 😂😂

What does your drive profile look like now?

You have an uber fast primary, uber fast secondary.... what's tertiary? 2TB MP 600 would be a good shout ;)

Hopefully this is understood but I pictured how I want / now have my set up. What I want to do now though is remove "Gaming" from the Desktop Lounge D drive onto its own drive (the new SSD) as I am finding that, especially with flight Sim), games take up a lot of room and I dont care re the back up situation of my games (save games are cloud based on most apps now but again - not that bothered re backing up of those - its only a game).

Dad-Laptop is not backed up currently but again not too bothered as Laptop now is just spare gaming and odd photo processing when away, but I have process there where photos and files will go to the G:\ drive which I then upload to Desktop-Lounge.

Normal photo transfers from camera are done through Lightroom Catalogue which basically adds Smart preview /catalogue entry to Desktop D drive for editing, original photo file to Desktop E drive and a copy to mapped Z drive - when I close Lightroom it then creates a catalogue back up to Z drive as well. Z drive is set to copy to F drive USB plugged in back of it every evening.

Desktop C and D drive are reliant on me doing back ups to Y drive.

This is sort of what I want to have setup in the future.. But it's also quite confusing!

Aye. I guessed it might be. Lol. I understand what I want to / am achieving lol.

Feel free to PM me any questions on LR but it may take a while for any detailed reply as am busy over next couple of weeks. I am trying to find some videos that helped me which are good to watch about LR use.

What drive have you gone for to add to the system? I wouldn't go over the top personally, but I do get your position.

Looking at your drive setup I think the most efficient use of the space would be to actually install a 500GB P44 to use as the primary -C drive. The non-gaming stuff in the D drive could then take over the current 1TB C Drive and the games could then have the 2TB drive on their own.

Otherwise, I would check the requirements of the non-gaming stuff and see if it's likely to be more than 1TB. If it's not, I would move that stuff to the new drive and have the games on the 2TB drive as they do get quite unwieldy nowadays.

Is it a home server you're using for the backups? Might be worthwhile considering actual cloud storage as it's quite cheap nowadays and automatic.

My setup is:

1TB M2 Primary - Windows & Programs (I'm very wasteful with this but I had gone for the Firecuda which isn't great at 500GB) - Current use 120GB
2TB M2 Secondary - Games drive - Holds everything other than MSFS. Currently around the 1.5TB mark
1TB M2 Tertiary - FS2020 drive - Just for FS2020, currently around the 500GB mark.
5TB 5200 Old School - All my media, family stuff storage, box sets, music, the works
2TB 7200 Old School - Documents, Program install storage, Dropbox location

I have my family stuff (photos, videos, important stuff) all backed up on Google
I have my current phones & media backed up on Dropbox
I then have an old-school manual backup in a 2TB drive caddy that I only periodically plug in for updates after a brief check that nothings broken. The only thing I would never want to lose would be my pictures. I have around 2 years of worthwhile stuff on my phone/dropbox, hence why I'm lazier with the old-school backup.

If your backups are genuinely important I would honestly consider cloud storage as the best option. Having an offline copy is always good, but would save the backup routine being so regular.

Thanks @Scott I was just looking at a 2TB P41 or P44.

For 2TB it depends on your non gaming stuff would use that much space. If not, I genuinely wouldn't waste the cash. Although if it doesn't make too much difference to your pocket then the more the merrier :D

I’m due a refund if £100 on the RAM. So spending that on the 2TB. Lol.

Re back ups. My main back up is always my 35k+ photos. Overkill a bit but don’t want to lose them. Anything else is replaceable on downloads etc. ideally I do as per my note above, realistically prob fortnightly / three weeks lol.
