Ah, that's a three pin plug so does suggest it has a microphone, so it's probably not the model you linked to.
It doesn't have a microphone. And I can use them in my other laptop, and use at the same time the in-build micro.

That’s working as expected.
Almost all Sony’s look alike, but they all have different specs.
Those do have a mic, I guarantee it.

You can still use the headphones and the laptop onboard mic, you'd just have to swap the mic output in sound settings. Or at least I think you can do that, it may not allow you to set them.
But it will default to the headphone microphone by default by design, that's completely normal.
Hang on... surely the attached photo of a white plug is 3 pin (3 stripes)? These cut the onboard microphone as expected (and include an inline microphone). Whereas the photo of the black plug is 2 pin. However, these are cutting my microphone as well. As do all of my regular 2 pin headphone plugs from a variety of manufacturers including Sennheiser and Sony. Even using headphone splitters does the same! Edit - it looks from Tony's image that I'm confusing stripes and pins but I think I'm still correct.

Ignore all that last bit, the headphones don’t have a mic and the issue is definitely as we first thought.

Thanks for letting me know, I have been informed that the microphone is hard wired to pass through the headset jack when headphones are plugged in. There is no way around this apart from using a USB mic or a headset with a built in microphone.
