PC that can handle a bit of ML

Hi all,

I'm about to start a new job, which seems like a good excuse to replace my ancient desktop PC!

I'm a researcher/analyst by trade so it's a bit embarrassing that I don't have a better understanding of hardware, but hardware moves so quickly that my knowledge is well out of date. I'd be very grateful for any advice you can offer.

I'll mostly be using the new machine for remoting into work resources, so to be honest I could get away with something very basic... but I'd like the machine to be capable of running some low-end machine learning so I have the option to build prototypes/debug/do analysis locally. Obviously any meaty work would be farmed out to external resources.

The machine wouldn't be used for gaming or any demanding graphics work (unless my kids try to get their hands on it).

I started the spec from the Hydra Elite 60, which has the 12GB 3060 GPU. I then made a few tweaks for more memory/storage, a CPU with integrated graphics, black case etc.

Any thoughts? I suspect I could do with some help on case, motherboard and PSU?

Many thanks!

Monitors: Very basic, to be run off the CPU's integrated graphics. Will probably get something like 2 x low-end Iiyama 24" IPS HD.

Budget: I don't have any hard budget limit, but probably couldn't justify going above £2k (including various peripherals as included below)

The main of the spec is fine, just needed a better supporting cast. This is way over what you need for your suggested use case though. It really needs a bit of gaming use to be considered worthwhile.

If the ML will use the GPU, and more importantly the VRam, then the 3060 is fine. Otherwise I would consider the 3060Ti, which would be a 1440p gaming card.

Honestly though, this is using a sledgehammer to push in a thumb tack :D

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated!

Yes you're right, this is definitely a much higher spec than I'd need day-to-day. On some projects I work on ML models that would need (multiples) of this spec, but to be honest I'm not sure how often I'd need that much compute at home...

Maybe I should let the kids use it for gaming at the weekend :)

Thanks again
