PC randomly freezing up - forcing hard restart

Hi all,

I have bought a new custom pc (specs below). I'm running into an issue where the PC seemingly randomly slows down by 99% (e.g. mouse starts moving very slowly across the screen, unable to do any actions) or freezes completely. The lights on the PC return to default and I'm unable to do anything. The only resolution to this is a hard reset. This happens at least once per day. I have been playing games such as League (not intensive) where this is still happening. While looking at things like the resource tracker or performance indicators I see the CPU spiking to 100%. If anyone knows what could be causing the issue it would be greatly appreciated as its very frustrating.

What are the temperatures like, you might have a bad paste job seeing that you had the perfectly good factory applied thermal paste removed from the cooler and replaced with 3 rd party paste

I don't think its a thermal issue, as my cpu cooler temp is maxing out ~40 degrees.

I've got Norton, but I've not got any issues appearing on there either.

First thing you should do is uninstall Norton with the official uninstaller (removing it via Windows doesn't remove everything):

Whilst it may not be the cause, Norton (and other 3rd party AV programs) can cause massive spikes in CPU usage if they are actively doing something, even in the background. Removing it will tell us if that is the cause or if it's something else. And don't worry as Windows includes Defender which will keep you protected and is a better product anyway

I was doing some more research on the topic and it could well have been the Norton Game Optimizer which was on by default. I've uninstalled Norton entirely this evening and so far no issues. Will see over the next week if thats has resolved the problem. Very frustrating if a software as well known as Norton is still causing major issues like this, especially through default options...

Unfortunately 'well-known' doesn't mean that it's good, or even necessary. PCS include it because Symantec pay them to do so, but PCS make it an option in the configurator.

Third-party security software is neither required nor recommended these days - and it hasn't been recommended at all since Windows 10 was introduced. One of the early things we look for in BSOD analysis, when the cause is not immediately obvious, is whether there is a third-party security product involved. You might be surprised how many times the third-party security product turns out to be the cause of the BSODs/crashes/freezes - and slowdowns in your case.

To be honest, Norton has been causing problems since the day it first launched...I still remember having to stop using it nearly 25 years ago as it was causing my PC problems

Did you use the official uninstaller as uninstalling it through windows won't work and will mess up your windows install.

Norton is nothing more than malware these days as are most 3rd party AV, they're totally unrequired for a good windows installation.
