PC crashing BSOD

That BSOD was a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED which happens when an exception occurs in the kernel which the error handlers cannot resolve. In this case the failing driver was volmgr.sys which is the Windows volume manager driver - the driver that manages disk volumes. The exception code was 0xc0000005 which is a memory (RAM) access violation - and that's pointing once again at RAM. In the stack trace you can see a page fault immediately after volmgr.sys, that means that the RAM page the driver was trying to read was either not in RAM (which should never happen) or the page couldn't be read properly (which the exception code shows was the case). The owning process is (unsurprisingly) the system process.

This BSOD is screaming RAM error, though if your Windows system is corrupted (which it might be - that's why a reinstall is so important now) that could also be the cause. Since Memtest ran clean, a corrupt Windows system is much more likely - although Memtest can never prove that your RAM is good, it's just the best test we have.

In troubleshooting it's very important to handle only one thing at a time, so I suggest you park the RAM suspicions for now and concentrate on getting Windows reinstalled. You need a stable and reliable software platform before you can start investigating potential hardware problems.

I no longer trust that PC and I strongly suggest that you don't use it to run the Media Creation Tool - you'll never be able to fully trust the installation files that are written to it by your flaky PC. Find another laptop or PC and run the Media Creation Tool on there so that you can have confidence in the install USB you make.

Hi,

I did a clean install last night and it seems to be running okay.
One thing I didn't mention on the post but I told PCS about it, when I reset my computer for some reason when I either shut down my PC or put it on sleep, my monitors would go off but my PC will run for like another 10-15mins then it would go off. Also when on sleep I would come back after a few hours and my PC would be off...

I have turned my PC recently and it was quick like it was before I don't the reset, not sure if that issue points to anything.

I will use it as normal excluding games for now and see how it goes. I will probably install Wow tomorrow and see if it crashes my PC.

Thanks for all the on going help

Oh great, that was an important step to take. :)

If your previous Windows system was compromised, and I think it probably was given your problems, then these issues are not unexpected. Now you have a fully clean system try to keep it as clean as you can for a while (by not installing lots of software). Installing WoW is a good idea since we know that crashed it at least once, but before then do try and make your PC fail in any way that you can think of.

I don't really understand what this sentence means....

By 'turned my PC recently' do you mean you physically moved it or laid it on its side or something? And did you do this before the clean install or after?

Haha that just me not looking at what I've typed. So I recently turned my computer off when I went to sleep and it went off almost instantly. For some reason when I reset my PC a few days back, only my monitors would shut off but my PC would run for 10-15mins before actually turning off.

Doing a clean install seems to have resolved this issue aswell so not sure if a Windows process was stopping it from shutting down properly.

I'm testing it but really difficult since I used to get BSOD when my PC was just running or it would be fine for few days then I would have the issues again haha. I'll let you know how it goes.

When you stayed let windows update install latest drivers does that do it for my RAM and stuff like that? Never knew it done that.

Would you recommend I download the latest Nvidia driver via geforce experience or direct as a download from Nvidia?

Well, your RAM doesn't need a driver but yes, Windows Update will find and install all the necessary drivers - including the NVidia card, but it might not be the very latest driver. That's why it's worth checking the Nvidia website for a later driver.

Download it direct from the Nvidia website and install it manually.

@ubuysa hey, my machine has been fine since I reinstalled windows and I've kept my machine very minimal since then.

However I saw a new windows update got released so I've done it but ever since my machine keeps restarting again but no BSOD. A mini dunp isn't being made either. I've attached a screenshot of a message that came up once but it doesn't come up every time my PC restarts.

I think a driver is causing it again..
I think the update was called 20H2 or something
See attached screenshots

@Martinr36 So looks like I've done all windows updates but twice when I tried installing latest Nvidia driver I got this error. I have finally managed to get it installed so I'll just wait and see if my PC restarts again...

See screenshots

did you download the driver directly from the Nvidia site

I'm afraid I'm offline for a couple of days. I'll take a look at the dumps as soon as I'm able. :)

More info, now my windows won't even start.

When it boots up it's black screen with a cursor loading icon.
May need to do another clean install

Just force reboot it.

There was a recent windows update that needs a few reboots before it starts windows properly.
