PC Build help

Hi all,

Would this spec be good for 4k gaming whilst being future proofed? I am using a Asus Swift OLED 32 monitor with this build. Are there any cheaper options as this build will be primarily for gaming only.

Also are the extra fans necessary for peak cooling?

Also this build is coming in at £3150 - my budget would have ideally been £2500 but can push it if required for future proofing

It's not very well balanced...slow RAM, dual-purpose CPU (instead of the gaming kin 9800X3D, which is cheaper, but out of stock), single SSD instead of splitting it (see helpful hints below for the reasons for this), arguably too low a GPU for good 4k, 3 different brand of fans to control/configure,

It would help us in tweaking it for you if you could include the complete config (all the way down to the price and link) as shown in the forum post below:

General helpful hints are here too:

Thanks for your reply.

- would the 9950x3d be better if I want to use it for light productivity also? Or can the 9800x3d be able to handle this also? I can see it is out of stock, does pc specialist restock?

Yes, PCS regularly restock, but some items (especially the popular ones) take longer to restock as the demand is higher. You would have zero issues in going for the 9950X3D as it will perform almost exactly the same as the 9800X3D in games...it will just be a £250 expense that you won't get any extra benefit from.

The 9950X3D is basically two chips on one platform...a 9800X3D + a 9700X. The 9950X3D would only make sense if there was a heavy multi-core workload as well as heavy gaming...otherwise the extra cores simply won't be used.

A heavy multi-core workload is really useful in content production environments (video, music, 3D, AI, photo-processing). It doesn't help in things like photo-editing, Excel or other MS Office applications.

Thank you I appreciate your help.

I think I will go for the 9800x3d

Would you have any other changes or suggestions for this build? Any recommended alternative products. As you mentioned my slow ram, single SSD and fan issue.

A 5080 will ruin your budget by another £300, and the Nvidia GPUs are already over-priced (IMHO). However, there's no current AMD equivalent for 4K gaming.

There's also no way a 5070Ti should be £800, and if you were wanting 1440p gaming we'd probably suggest an AMD 9070XT, which can be had much cheaper, and sits between the 5070 and 5070Ti for performance (same goes at 4K, but then all GPU FPS scores drop significantly anyway), and on average is c.6% slower than the 5070Ti (but it varies greatly by game).

Have a look at this for more in-depth testing...

There's no way I can build a 4K gaming PC (with a 5080) for £2500...not even £3000 really.

This is the closest I can get with the 5070Ti / 9070XT options (and am using an older 7800X3D as the CPU placeholder, so remember to add £109 for the 9800X3D as you can't continue the config with the 9800X3D selected).

Nvidia 5070Ti option:

Case
LIAN LI O11DYNAMIC EVO RGB GAMING CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Eight Core CPU (4.2GHz-5.0GHz/104MB w/3D V-CACHE/AM5) - placeholder for 9800X3D (+£109)
Motherboard
GIGABYTE X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 (AM5, DDR5, M.2 PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7) - better level of motherboard
Memory (RAM)
32GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 (2 x 16GB) - faster RAM, at AMD AM5 sweet-spot
Graphics Card
16GB MSI GEFORCE RTX 5070 Ti SHADOW 3X OC - HDMI, 3 x DP - no point paying a premium for the Asus model, as there's no performance difference
1st M.2 SSD Drive
1TB SOLIDIGM P44 PRO GEN 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (up to 7000MB/sR, 6500MB/sW) - separate, primary drive for Windows, apps and game launchers only
1st M.2 SSD Drive
4TB CORSAIR CORE XT MP600 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (up to 5000 MB/R, 4400 MB/W) - separate, secondary drive for game installs
Power Supply
CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES™ ATX 3.1, MODULAR, CYBENETICS GOLD - the lowest I'd go for this level of build, with a little room for a GPU upgrade in a 3-5 year's time (although if the budget is there, the HX1200i would be my choice)
Power Cable
1 x 1.5 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead, 1.0mm Core)
Processor Cooling
CORSAIR ICUE LINK TITAN 360 RX RGB HIGH PERFORMANCE CPU COOLER - took the additional expense of the LCD screen off, but feel free to add it back in if you really want it (at extra cost of course)
Thermal Paste
STANDARD THERMAL PASTE FOR SUFFICIENT COOLING
Extra Case Fans
3 x Corsair ICUE LINK RX120 RGB PWM Fan + Controller Kit - not sure you need these, but I prefer to balance the airflow with more, slower fans than fewer faster fans (personal preference here)
Sound Card
ONBOARD 6 CHANNEL (5.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Card
ONBOARD 2.5Gbe LAN PORT

Thank you for taking your time and doing this for me. Would a similar build work if I decided to go for the 5080?

Also do you think I need the extra case fans or can I leave them off? Or use an alternative fan?

Well, the simple answer is yes it would work...at an additional £400 over the Nvidia 5070Ti build above.

You don't need the extra fans, you just configure the LianLi case fans to balance the airflow coming in to the airflow going out through the AIO fans/cooler.

PCS tend to include a cheap PCS fan on the rear too - but you can always add more 120/140mm fans to the bottom later (possibly matching the LianLi dual-zone RGB Uni Fan TL case fans) if you want/need them.
