Overkill? Liquid-cooled monster

Hi all,

Just like everyone else I imagine, over lockdown I've been making some savings and have been thinking of buying my own pc for the first time. In my life I've only owned laptops and thought it was about time I cashed out and got myself my dream computer. Obviously with the price hikes and stock shortages this isn't exactly the right time to be doing that so this build is more of a vague idea of what I want rather than an order I'm about to place, but I wanted to get the opinion of people with more experience of pc builds and I have a LOT of questions: (I'll post the actual specification below)

My budget: No particular budget - though obviously I don't want to be spending money unnecessarily

My usecase: This will be mainly be used for gaming, however I work in datascience and have been using my decently-spec'd laptop (at the time i bought it in early 2019) to occasionally run my ML models and analysis frameworks on and I'd love to be able to do that more on this PC, hence the need for a large amount of memory. I have a bunch of spare harddrives available around the house so I'll be slotting those all in for more disk space

Monitor: I think I'll try and find a monitor separately through curry's or similar. Hoping to get a 4K 144Hz one to be able to handle the high end RTX cards. I'm still a little confused about DP/Gsync etc but I'll be doing a lot more research in monitors closer to purchase

Questions:
- Are the Lian Li cases no longer available? I watched a few videos on it and it seemed like a really nice case/cooling system but when I select RGB Lian Li EKWB Liquid Cooling build to configure all the cases are greyed out, and the lian li case doesn't appear. Maybe I made a mistake somewhere down the line.
- I am a really big fan of these ThermalTake Tower cases, however saw the Gamers Nexus video on ThermalTake and he had a lot of negative things to say about the case regarding its airflow (
) however this only through a conference meeting. Are these problems still true? Would the white (Level 20 HT) be better?
- adding onto this: a lot of the marketing with these ThermalTake cases have a temperature/fan controller display at the bottom of them, but the images on PC specialist don't have this controller. Is it possible to get one through pc specialist? If not how easy would it be to install one myself?
- When I checked out the spec I got a warning message that said I only needed 686W but the power supply i selected is 850W, but there aren't any power supplies with wattages less than this. Was this a mistake?
- Is liquid cooling complete overkill in this day and age? I've heard a lot of talk about how air cooling can pretty much give you the same results but if I plan to overclock my components surely
- Regarding the supply issue: I realise this is a question probably everyone and their mums have asked but is there a vague idea about how long it takes for the 'pre-order' parts to be arrive and how far in the queue people ordering now will be? (Is it on the order of days, weeks, months?) I'm not in any particular hurry at the moment so I don't mind the wait too much. I'm more than aware of all the logistic issues with shipping and parts at the moment but obviously it would be nice to have a better idea of the timescales.
- How much of builds like this come pre-built and how much do you need to do yourself?

Sorry for the wall of text! I would be incredibly happy if someone were able to answer even one of these questions. And please let me know if there's any part of this that you feel would be unnecessary because obviously 4K pounds for a computer is an insane amount (to me at least) whether I can afford it or not!

Above more than smashes your requirements and it's about as ultimate as it gets. I think all your queries have been covered and I would agree with the responses. There are many rabbit holes to run down when building a system so I think you've made the right choice by holding fast and just asking :D

Now, the build below is actually a slightly lesser spec than the above but I do have some method for my madness so let me try and cover what I've gone for.

The main change is the 5900X over the 5950X. The 5950X is an absolute processing monster. There can be no doubt that it's the user grade king of the hill for all number crunching requirements. For your professional application there will be no better choice and it will literally be 25% more powerful than the one I have selected. There are caveats with it though. It will use a ton of power and put out a ton of heat, it costs a fortune and when it comes to gaming I think the sustained clocks of the 5900X are actually better. Weighing it all up, and considering that it's a part-time-professional-job-number-cruncher I don't think it actually warrants the down-side. Is 25% more productivity going to make a significant dent in your day to day? Another benefit of the 5900X is that the VRM capacity of the STRIX motherboard more than has you covered so there are savings again on the motherboard.

I've bumped up the PSU to the RMx model as it's better again quality wise and this will make a difference in the future. I also removed the additional fan as I would suggest getting your hands on a LL120 from Amazon or the like. It plugs straight in and it will match any lighting profiles you select with minimal fuss.

Thank you for your replies everyone! I've noticed none of your builds have been liquid cooled so am I right in assuming that what you're all saying is that it's ultimately unnecessary?

I've bumped up the PSU to the RMx model as it's better again quality wise and this will make a difference in the future. I also removed the additional fan as I would suggest getting your hands on a LL120 from Amazon or the like. It plugs straight in and it will match any lighting profiles you select with minimal fuss.
The case and cooling in your build is different to the one I posted. Is the recommendation about the fans relevant to my case, yours, or both? I was a little confused about the extra case fans because I don't know how necessary they are or even if they'll fit in the case I chose! Also I did choose the RMx power supply.

So I figured out where to find the Lian Li cases and redid everything. Downgraded the CPU because I think if it comes to the point where I'm going to need that much more performance I'm probably just going to running stuff off a work server. Beyond that I have a couple more questions:

-The case fans: for the lian li case the marketing image has 7 fans that I can see. Are those fans included in the system or do I need to buy 7 extra fans to get the same as in the picture (below)? Or a few included?
1612545573765.png

-What are the Braided Power Supply Cables? Are they necessary? Is it £79 for prettier cables?

- I saw in another thread that if I were to choose the the 5950X I would need to also pick the Crosshair Motherboard in order to handle the temperatures. How true is this?

I have a very similar build to the above which I got from PCS in November. I've added a couple of pics.

Few answers to your questions above

The 7 fans are all included
The braided cables, I purchased these and you can see them in the pictures attached, you don't actually see that many of them and I'm not sure what the ones look like that may have come with the build if I didn't purchased the braided ones so no idea if they look better or not.

I'm not sure on the 5950x and motherboard so one of the more in the know posters will have to answer that.
I have the 5900x and Strix 570x though and the whole system works like a dream to be honest.

Amazing pics thanks a lot! Really helpful response and completely in love with this setup. I'm not seeing much space for additional hard drives though. Is it possible to expand the storage?

Do you mean when you are in the configuration page? If so there is a tab that says, Show additional storage options, its just above the 1st M.2 drive tab.

Mine PC has the following

1st Storage Drive2TB SEAGATE IRONWOLF PRO 3.5", 7200 RPM 128MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive,500GB SAMSUNG 980 PRO M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 6900MB/R, 5000MB/W)
2nd M.2 SSD Drive, 2TB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 5000MB/R, 4400MB/W)

Your main benefit on higher end motherboards will tend to be the voltage regulation and the heat sinks, something not be overlooked when you’re considering a processor with a higher core count. Thermal throttling will seriously impact performance so choosing the right board for the CPU will make a huge difference to a build.

Braided cables are at the other end of the scale, they’re an aesthetic choice.

Hi everyone,

There's about 100 pounds difference between these two CPUs and I really don't understand the difference between them. I've heard contradicting advice about whether the more expensive of the two (Crosshair VII) should be used with the 5950X. I've seen people say that the Crosshair will be much better equipped to handle the heat with custom-loop watercooling and others that say there's not really any difference with that regard.

Also, The AMD website says that there are slots for two M.2 drives on both of these motherboards but when building the spec I'm only able to put in 1 M.2 drive, so which is it? Is there space for one or two?

Crosshair is really the best option for that CPU. No point skimping when your getting the best parts on the market, you want to get the most out of them.

Especially as i guess you will be overclocking at some point given your build

Not really sure on the answer, can only give you what I have, pretty much the exact same build as this but with a x570-F and 5900x CPU, strix version of the 3080 too.

Temps, this is just for gaming currently at 4k Ultra settings or as high as possible, CPU is generally in the high 60's but has hit a high of 81, but that was during 6 hours solid on Cyberpunk.
Last night I was playing 2k21 golf, 4k all Ultra and the CPU temp never went above 65.

No idea how hotter the 5950x gets though.

I have two M.2 drives in my build.

Just had a quick look on configurator and I could add two M.2 drives on the Crosshair MB

Hey all. Is there a reason I don't have the option for 64G at 3600 MHz? Is that a hardware restriction or PCS stock or what?
PCS simply don't hold stock of these... It's fairly simple to get a PC with 32GB (16×2) and then upgrade yourself by adding 16x2. What would be the use of your PC that there's a need of 64GB, I wonder?

There have been issues with filling all 4 slots previously so I think that may be the reason they haven't quite gone for the faster speeds with 64GB yet.

We've found that on a lot of boards with 4 x 3600MHz DIMMS, we've faced instability. It was only very recently that PCS actually allowed 4 x 3600 DIMMS at all, in fact I think they even took off 3600MHz all together at one stage because of the problems they were having getting it stable.

On the forum, we recently had a user with 4 x 3600MHz DIMMS with instability, but we lowered the DOCP (memory overclock profile) down to the next lowest setting which is 3533MHz, and that remained completely stable after about 36 hours of continuous testing.

I'd suggest speccing 2 x 16Gb DIMMS for now of 3600MHz, and then phoning PCS to ask if you can add another 2 DIMMS. I'm sure they'll accommodate you.

If you were to face instability, then we could drop the DOCP down a little until it reaches stability. Worst thing to happen is you'll have the clocks reduced a little until such a time as Asus / AMD release a BIOS update to address it.

But I'm very confident that IF you were to face issues, it would be stable at 3533MHz.
