Optimus XI Review

This is my second laptop from PCSpecialist, bought a vortex IV about 6 years ago (also pictured below). Vortex was still performing well, when it turned on, boot drive had become very temperamental an would occasionally not turn on so figured I got a good 6 years from it and it was time to treat myself to a new one.

Service from PCSpecialist was amazing as always, my laptop was build and dispatched in 4 days, which was surprisingly quick considering the current climate.

I've had the Optimus about 2 weeks not and I can say it is an excellent laptop, it looks very nice and is surprisingly thin and light for a decent spec laptop, much thinner and lighter than the Vortex which I think weighed close to 100kgs. Although its not Razer Blade thin, but they you pay a significant premium for that sort of thing.

In terms of performance it is lightning quick, from booting to opening apps and running games, this thing leaves the Vortex for dust. I opted for a single 1TB m.2 this time round and didn't bother with a 2.5inch drive as there is still room in the chassis for a second m.2 which I will probably add in the future, the vortex had a smallSSD/largeHDD config, I was surprised how much of a difference the single SSD made to performance over this. I don't do any editing or content creation so I can commend on anything like that, this was bought purely for gaming. That said its the size and weight of a standard laptop so if you were taking this to and from work/uni etc it would be fine in terms of portability, the charger is also quite compact.

In terms of gaming, I have been running a few games on it and have recorded the benchmark or real fps if they didn't have a benchmark. Admittedly some of these arenot the most demanding but they are what I had already in my library or what was available on XGP. Worth noting that benchmarks are usually a bit unrealistic and you generally get higher than this in game.

Ashes - Max Settings - Benchmark Avg 35.8 FPS - Worth noting that the Ashes benchmark is not very realistic and I never actually noticed it drop below 60FPS during an actual game
GTA 5 - Max Settings - Benckmark Avg 69 FPS - usually sits around 80 in game
GEARS 5 - Max Settings with ultra texture pack installed - Benchmark AVG - 62FPS - usually around 70 in game
Metro Exodus - in game on ultra it gets upwards of 80 FPS - however I am skeptical of this as its the Xbox Game Pass version and it regularly messes up the settings. Its also a notoriously demanding game and I wouldn't have expected this high FPS on a 2060. Never the less it still runs really well so I can complain.
Other games I've been running are not really worth mentioning as they're not overly demanding, Skyrim Fallout Halo etc, sitting over 100FPS most of the time, even when modded to the point of crashing randomly.
I think regardless of what game you throw at this at 1080p your be able to run anything on ultra settings with no problems at all.

If I had any complaints about the Optimus they are very minor, the screen isn't the brightest, so if you sit near an window on sunny day your going to have a bad time, but in any other situation its fine. And also the CPU and GPU exhaust vents are on the side of the machine, so if you are gaming with a separate mouse, your hand gets a little toasty when its under load. Finally this maybe wouldn't bother most people but the touch pad is dead center on the laptop and I am finding when I an in the usual wsad position, my thumb keeps rubbing on the pad and interfering in game, i've gotten used to tucking my thumb in but worth mentioning anyway.
I also highly recommend anyone buying a gaming laptop also purchases some kind of cooling tray, this adds nothing to the performance or temps of the laptop, but if your using in on your lap it stops your legs from getting hot, this isnt a negative comment on the Optimus, gaming laptops just get hot regardless of who or where they are from.

Nice review. I would ask one thing, what are thermals and fire strike/time spy benchmarks like?

That’s either not fully configured or a paste issue, but that’s not normal temps

It’s also a completely different chassis by a different manufacturer
