So is this laptop very noisy and hot as I have read from other people? I am starting to think twice about it. I should assume, though, that this one should be less noisy than the Vortex II as if I am correct, the Vortex II is more like a desktop replacement.

After using it for about a month or so heat is not a problem. I don't use any cooling mat, it just sits on my lap or on the desk and is fine - I had the same initial worry about the temperature but it isn't half as bad as I feared.
It is noisy but only under heavy workload. It doesn't bother me as when I game I use a headset anyway. It's not something I really care about but if you can't tune out noise then it may annoy you. It's a very subjective characteristic of a laptop, I'm sorry I can't be much more help.

Thanks for the reply. I am coming from a Dell XPS m1530 (4-5 years old), and it became extremely noisy and warm. That's why I am a bit afraid about the complaints. I won't be playing very heavily (a couple of hours, 3 at most straight), but I assume during gameplay it will get warmer and noisier. It is just in the everyday we browsing and watching video which I am afraid of.

I have been using the 17" optimus II for a couple of weeks now and I am very impressed. Noise, what noise, you can't even tell this thing is on under general use. When you watch a video, play a game, do something a bit more demanding like image processing you can hear the fan and feel the heat. Heat it kicks out under a small load is hardly noticeable, I played BF3 through a big fight scene and the I noticed it was very hot out the side, nearly too hot to keep my hand there. Got a bit worried and checked my temps..all OK.

Just goes to show that the fan is doing the job intended. I can't fault this machine at all, very impressed and well worth the money.
