Opinions on this Gaming Laptop Spec

Hi All,

Hoping to get some help with a laptop spec (unsuitable space for desktop & portability would be useful), will be used predominantly for gaming but multiple apps running simultaneously generally, although more on the management/sim side/strategy/CRPG's rather than FPS's (EFT/Valorant, maybe at a push) presently, but with the option to play whatever in the future.

Budget is pretty flexible, £1500-2000+.

Yeah, that's first class. Not much to improve on that chassis.

You could have a look at the Nova systems, which offer desktop hardware in a laptop chassis. You're not going to do too much better though :)

Very similar... yes. You can see the value in the Nova systems though, especially with the 3900 desktop chip.

The main difference is the horsepower of the CPU in the Nova. It's going to be VERY powerful. That being said, it's more aimed at productivity than gaming.

You can't beat your original selection for gaming. The Nova would just add an option, and another dimension for productivity outside gaming.

Thank you very much, can definitely see the value difference and the £300 could be used on a new monitor/mouse at a later stage, however I don't presently see the need for productivity outside of gaming, so I guess the first one would best suit my present needs, unless the £300 is only offering negligible improvement (I'm not 100% sure on the difference each would offer in terms of gaming)?

They are both 1080p screens. The main difference of your first selection is the high refresh panel. It will make reasonable use of the 2070 Super overall.

I cannot be sure on the difference between the cards in the chassis. The Nova has desktop hardware in laptop versions, so the 2070 in it may actually be more powerful than the one in the other system but I wouldn't know without testing so maybe a good idea to call up and ask regarding that.

When you are purchasing a monitor, I would definitely aim for 1440p over 1080p, either system has you more than covered.

Do I think there is £300 between the laptops? Unlikely. If you're primarily laptop gaming and looking for very high refresh, the £300 may be worthwhile. Honestly it's a toss up. You'll be absolutely delighted either way.

Oh... something just popped into my head. The Nova system would only need the 3700X to be comparable... so that would save you money again. The 3900 is purely for processing grunt... which you don't need. The 3700X vs the Intel chip will see a reduction in around 5% FPS. The irony is that the 2070 will be a 200FPS card so you don't really need to consider that on these panels. When it comes to the 1440p, it's even LESS of a difference as you will be GPU bound rather than CPU bound.

Just to add, the other benefit of the Recoil is that it has Thunderbolt that carries DP, which is well worth it for a gaming laptop.

Reason being is you can add a thunderbolt eGPU such as this:

It's just a caddy that has it's own power supply and you can add any desktop GPU you like, then attach it via thunderbolt to the laptop and blamo, you've got roughtly 75% of the power of that desktop card routing to the laptop, so when the 2070 becomes too weak (which would take a LONG time), then you don't have to throw the laptop out, just resort to the eGPU and a fairly low end GPU and you're still maxxing out the screen in AAA titles.

That feature alone makes Intel laptops quite appealing.

Thunderbolt is an Intel IP, but as I understand it, it's being merged fully and included in USB 4, so in the relatively short term future, we'll see it included in AMD laptops also, but not the current gen.

Thank you both for your assistance, final question (I think) can I ask is there any benefit to waiting for the new Ryzen 4000 series to become available in laptop, I'll be honest and say I'm unsure as to how long the wait would be but if the addition is worthwhile given my investment then maybe that's an option.

No one knows how long it will be due to the ongoing issues, but benchmarks are out for the top 4000 CPU's and they're much more powerful than intel whilst using substantially less power, so yes, it would be worth waiting.

Thank you again, might put it on hold for a short while and see where I stand in the coming weeks, don't want to regret it at the end of all this.
