Nvidia are in Intels shoes right now think they are too far ahead to be caught and the competition isn't pushing them yet

AMD and dropping the ball massively here by almost price fixing with Nvidia, the muscled Intel outa the CPU market with a far superior product they could do the same to Nvidia who have gotten really complacent. It's whether or not they want to actually do that

Intel have come leaps and bounds with Arc but I just don't trust Intel either

I think the difference between Nvidia and Intel, is that Nvidia's corporate AI/professional customers aren't being shafted as well...otherwise they'd risk everyone stripping out their GPUs and swapping in AMD...but we know AMD don't have the pure grunt of Nvidia GPUs (at the moment), so there's no simple switch being offered.

So this is obviously to be taken with a massive pinch of salt, in theory it's possible, the lines on the 12VHPWR design allow for up to 9amp (rated) on each wire, I think if my previous maths was correct, this could push 10.3amp on the 5070 if the connections were compromised as badly as possible.

I don't really see how that could lead to melting so damn quickly though so perhaps this is a separate issue with the same symptoms

Or it's a nothing burger

Keep in mind that design should typically build in a hefty safety factor in there as well. IMO a wire designed for 9A should easily exceed 2x the limit without self destructing.

I would suggest that particular case is an outlier with something going specifically wrong. I doubt a 5070 could melt one of those wires without something catastrophic being wrong outside of the design intent.

Regardless though, it shows just how much of a minefield that setup is. It's clearly not fit for purpose as what can go wrong, will go wrong.

There's a new Nvidia driver to add optimal settings for another 6 games, plus add support for the 5060Ti.

Be careful out there people ;)
