looking for a pc for 12 year old, mainly plays minecraft and fortnite, likes coding and youtube etc. needs pc for school also. is below spec too much/too little??

At that budget you'll get better performance out of a Collinsville, realistically to get a decent spec you'd need to double your budget

Of course, this isn't a solution to the school work problem as I'm not sure there's Word for Xbox yet...

A moderately capable system is possible for £800, but it's not going to be a high FPS experience, even in Fortnite. The system you posted isn't really upgradeable, but it's possible to make one that is if that sounds like an approach to take?

thank you! i knew i was out of my depth with this stuff but felt really stupid googling Collinsville LOL! he has a consolebut he really wants to get into the PC world, he is good with tech stuff and i want to encourage it but very much want a starter one that he can build onto in time if he wants to, could you give me some guidance on how to make an upgradeable one?

This is where you would want to start with a system that could be upgraded. Note, there are a couple of corners cut so I will follow up with what I would tend to recommend if the budget could be expanded upon again. I genuinely wouldn't recommend anything lower than this and would be more inclined to recommend a £400 off the shelf laptop for the computer studies. Gaming desktops are, unfortunately, very expensive. Even non-gaming desktops are expensive by the time you take the peripherals into account.... which the laptop would already have.
