Has anyone managed to get g-sync working on this? I've got no option on the NVidia display panel...I'm probably missing something obvious...

Should look something like this.....

Ah...you see, that's the problem! I don't have that option:

MissingGSync.png

I've tried a clean install with the drivers from the included CD, and also with the drivers from nvidia; no luck either time. I've seen other notebooks exhibit this behaviour before; it was down to a BIOS setting for Optimus; but there's no such option on the bios from PCS (Do they get their own 'custom' bios or something?).

Regardless...just have no option for it, so I was hoping it's something obvious that I've missed (rather than the obvious which is missing!!!)

Is the 4k screen definitely gsync? I've heard some people say the AUO B173ZAN01.1 which is apparently what the Octane III has doesn't support it.

Thats not the impression that I got when ordering...(or on the invoice). If it's not, it'll be going back! Already on the verge anyway because of overheating issues. :(:(:(:(

People I know from other forums that have received the 4k panel in their P775DM3-G laptops definitely have G-Sync. I was under the impression that the ones for sale in the Octane III were definitely GSync compatible.

FWIW, it's the same with the Octane 3 (Clevo P775DM3-G) - and in that case there's no Optimus, so the discrete GPU is always in use.

It looks like the AUO panel isn't in NVidia's database. All laptop display panels connected by embedded Displayport are G-Sync capable [assuming your GPU has G-Sync enabled in its VBIOS], but the option will only show up if the manufacturer has paid a fee to Nvidia to be licensed for G-Sync.

EDIT: Annoyingly, it looks like it's a slightly newer revision of a panel which *is* G-Sync certified. As the old one was eventually certified, I'm sure the new one will be too in due course - but I'm quite surprised that PCS haven't exactly been promoting this! I will email them next week to see what they say about G-Sync on their 4K panels...

PCS panel: AUO B173ZAN01.1
G-Sync listed: AUO B173ZAN01.0

Thanks all for the replies; I e-mailed PCS last week myself and am awaiting a reply, but was hoping that someone here would have the answer. It looks like Retron is on to something though with the monitor versions...I'll wait and see what PCS says.

Well, just got a reply. The screen is not G-Sync compatible, and I should've been given a warning when placing the order. Just for fun, I tried again...no warning.

I'm going to be returning this - I had massive heat issues, which I resolved with a re-paste (the heatsink wasn't even touching half of the CPU, and the pasting job can only be described as 'terrible'. Combined with the lack of G-Sync (although it has got a nice sticker on the laptop saying "G-Sync"!), I'm just not happy with my purchase at all. :-(

The sticker is because the GPU supports G-sync so if you connected your laptop up to an external G-sync monitor then it would be fine... (I think I read that there are, or at least could have been, some versions of the GPUs that don't support g-sync, hence why the GPUs are marketed as being g-sync ones - either that or it's just Nvidia marketing).

I'm not saying I think that's a particularly clear way of explaining things, just that that's my guess as to why g-sync is mentioned.

I suspect it's more that the laptops came with a (G-Sync licensed) 1080p screen, which is then swapped out for the 4K screens that PCS ordered in. I'd bet the G-Sync sticker came already attached from Clevo...

Yeah, I'd probably agree that the sticker was already there - a G-Sync laptop though should be a laptop with G-Sync...not a laptop that's only G-Sync if you don't use it as a laptop. I'm pretty sure there's probably something in the nvidia partner brand guidelines about that.

What's worse is seeing on forums elsewhere people with lovely 4K G-Sync screens on P775DM3-G (except this isn't really a -G!); actually feel a bit upset after waiting six weeks for this! On the plus side, I'm probably a bit closer to a 120Mhz screen.

Just think I'll wait a bit before ordering next time! (And I've notice now that there is NOW a warning saying that 3K/4K screens aren't G-Sync compatible!) :-(

Are you absolutely sure you have exhausted the GSync options? Through the BIOS etc? The reason I ask is that others definitely have GSync. I believe that may be the Octane though.

The Octane is hard-wired to only allow discrete graphics, there are no options whatsoever regarding the use of G-Sync in the BIOS.

As davful says, the site now warns you that G-Sync isn't available on 4K screens. This is all very reminiscent of the way the Pentile 4K screens were advertised as 60Hz a couple of years ago and they were only changed to 48Hz on the site after I emailed to clarify what the refresh rate was!

That's a real shame. I'm so glad I didn't go with the 4k screen now :(

Can GSync be used through the display ports? That's possibly why the advertising is still on the laptop etc.

I don't know if it can be used through the ports - I didn't buy it for that. Re. the sticker (which was just a minor point, btw), NVidia have some pretty strict branding guidelines, especially as they're now pushing "G-Sync enabled laptops" heavily.

Just had an e-mail from PCS back - I'd been told that there was a notice when you order the laptop...which I didn't get. I tried to place another order yesterday when I was told this, and didn't get any warning message, but then did when I tried again around 4:30pm.

The message says "there is indeed a warning" (which now there is), but the implication is that I didn't see it or ignored it. That's actually made me furious as opposed to just upset! I've been buying from PCS for six years now; I've had four different laptops off them, and until that e-mail, was prepared to think of this just as a one-off. But that's got me angry.

Either way, once I'm back home tomorrow, it's being returned.

Quite right too, I would be livid about that as their automated system is horrendous and they know it. There has been loads of complaints around how these laptops have been configured on the website so it's definitely not a one off. To put the blame and responsibility on your shoulders is out of order. I doubt you would get the same response on the telephone though so it may be worth a call.

Interesting that a message didn't pop up during configuration!

I just recently built a laptop and while fiddling with the 4K screen option, i had a message pop up stating I wouldn't have that function with the selected screen.

Nevertheless, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to know the message isn't always working and would assist you with your order.

It's not a case of the message isn't always working. The message wasn't there until about 4:30 on the day I asked to RMA Cancel because of it. I've been on the site enough times over the six week wait that I had for the panel, trying to place orders as this was the only way to find the 'anticipated' date of the screen arriving - I even tried again just before my second-to-last message to them, and it wasn't there. Funnily enough, around the same time I was cancelling, there were a couple of other threads (I think one was a review) popping up about there not being a message too...then it started appearing.

As to being happy to know the message wasn't working, the only help I was offered was a 'free' downgrade to a 1080p panel (which, as I'd just waited six weeks for a 4K panel was a non-starter - if I'd wanted 1080p I'd have ordered it), and told that "There is indeed a warning" along with an implication that I either hadn't seen it or ignored it. (Up until that final point, I though the situation was recoverable, and was really wanting to keep the laptop - I'd have been happy with the offer they'd made to fix the heatsink (different issue!)).

Ultimately, after spending around £2.5k on a laptop, it was the attitude of the customer service that finally made up my mind.

I should say though, I've had three other laptops from PCS over the past five years, and this is the first problem I've had. I'll order again in the future, probably leave it a few months hoping for a 120hz 4K G-Sync screen (and a cooler-running quieter Clevo) as I think the company, hardware, and pricing is great - it's just let down by bad customer service.
