I tend to buy PCs for 5 years ,at renewal date on mine. Thoughts on this beast?

Any tweaks, suggestions? I have an existing 2TB SSD so was planning to add that myself when the build arrives.

Hi there. Can I ask a couple of questions to get a handle on things?

What's your budget?

What’s the uses for the system, gaming, streaming, editing, design etc?

What monitor will you be using with the build? Make and model or resolution and refresh rate would be handy to know 👍

Hi AgentCooper:

~3.5k - this is few hundred over that. Alternative would be to drop the CPU down to 5900 and I have considered the 3080 but 10gb VRAM will not get my 5 years I suspect.

gaming + work (work is heavy excel and financial trading application - memory and cpu hungry)

dell aw3420dw, ultra wide screen, running at 3440x1440 - its a great monitor but my 1080 cant keep up.

Happy to hear what you think.

Brilliant, thanks for getting back to me with that. I’ve made a few tweaks that may be worth taking a look at.

Kept the CPU as is but put a more suitable motherboard in, the ROG Strix might struggle to keep up with it. Added faster RAM in there, no doubt that’ll be handy for your work. Put the fastest possible M.2 drive in so your boot time will be minimal. And another, larger M.2 so gaming and processes would have the advantage of fast loading. 850w PSU to cover future upgrades. Put the best cooler in, you’ll need that to keep the CPU running optimally. It comes with high quality thermal paste pre-applied so dropped the optional one. Picked the upgraded WiFi card which is faster and also has built in Bluetooth, handy for peripherals.

Now... the 3090. Its not really a gaming card. It’s more of a monster high end design/rendering card that has added bonus of being capable of gaming. I personally think that it’s not really worth the additional expense as the differences on screen will be negligible, virtually nonexistent. So if you go for the 3080, you’re saving a significant chunk of cash which you can then bank and put towards a next gen GPU in a few years a time. Thus turning your five year system into a ten year system!

Can I ask, is it fairly easy to add in an existing SSD drive I have to the PCS build with this case?

The 680X is a dream case for building/adding stuff in because of it’s dual chamber design. You’ll have no trouble adding your drive in 👍
