Looking at getting my 14 yr old grandson Gaming PC is this spec too much or a worthwhile setup for a few years without needing upgrade ?

Do you know what screen they game on? If it is a 'standard' HD screen (1080p, 60Hz) then the GPU looks about right. I think that the CPU and motherboard might be overkill though. I would go for something like this:

There is more storage, faster RAM, the case looks a bit better for airflow, while still having front RGB fans. The stock cooler is pretty good for that CPU but if you really want a better one I'd go the whole hog and get a H100. If you want the Gold warranty or the higher PSU you can add them back in, of course but even the 550W PSU gives room for upgrades in terms of GPU (the configurator lets you go up to a 2080 super without warning you about power limits)

I'm a bit rusty at configuring builds though, so I'd hang on and see what other, more knowledgeable forum members have to say too.
