Newbie advice for a multi tasking machine

Hi All,

This is my first time building a machine as I've previously just relied on buying one of the higher end machines from somewhere like Dell.

I don't think I'm looking for a gaming rig but will need something that's a decent spec as I'm regularly running multiple applications in parallel.

For example I can be running 2/3 Blue stacks / Virtual PC instances, a web scraper and then looking to use the machine for reasonably intensive data manipulation in Excel & Power BI.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the spec below, and would especially appreciate feedback on:

GPU - Is the GPU overkill for my uses?
RAM - would i be better off going for 48 then upgrading if / when it's needed?
Case / Power / Cooling - is there any benefit in upgrading from the basic?
Networking - is wireless network card needed? - i have boosters giving wifi coverage throughout the house

What's your max budget? What monitor will you pair with it? What's the main purpose of the system?

I'd ideally like to stay under about 2.5/3k, this is flexible if needed.

Monitor is an old Dell U2715h

Main purpose of the system is:
I don't think I'm looking for a gaming rig but will need something that's a decent spec as I'm regularly running multiple applications in parallel.

For example I can be running 2/3 Blue stacks / Virtual PC instances, a web scraper and then looking to use the machine for reasonably intensive data manipulation in Excel & Power BI.

I've a little awareness of the intel issues but understood that was mainly when gaming and that intel was likely still better for application multitasking. I certainly won't be running anything developed on Unreal (the only games are through an android blue stacks emulator)

That’s not correct, gaming was the first scenario to show issues but that was right at the start, within a month or two other uses were showing the same issues, the degradation is due to over voltage, use case is irrelevant, any use will trigger boost clocks. The silicon is literally melting due to over voltage in boost scenarios, it’s worth actually going through the linked thread, sounds like you’re only aware of the very initial reports before the full investigations were carried out.

AMD are ahead in multicore for almost all uses, when you factor in the added stability, lower price to performance, and that you can actually cool them with standard coolers, there’s no competition from Intel anymore

Thanks that's really helpful.

For my setup it looks like the 7950X may be a good alternative for the i9-14900. It doesn't look like the gains would be sufficient to go to 9950.
Any feedback on the wider build?

The whole platform would need to be changed as it's a different chipset.

When you say you're running 2 to 3 bluestacks / virtual PC instances, how much RAM do you allocate to those and how many are running concurrently? 96Gb seems an awful lot of RAM for the uses you're suggesting.

Ok thanks I'll respec based on the 7950x.

Re the RAM, I currently run 4GB per instance, that's due to my machine only having 16GB. It can take up to 12GB per instance. Reflecting on it though if I dropped to 48GB then I could run 3 instances and still have 12 left. Worst case I close an instance when more is needed. Thanks that's helpful!

Thanks for the advice so far it's been really useful, particularly around the Intel vs AMD point.

Whilst respeccing I've realised that the spec above whilst good is probably way more than I need and that downgrading the GPU and the HDD can save considerable amounts.

I've spec'd a new machine below, any feedback would be greatfully received.

As per above the machine will mainly be used for running multiple bluestacks instances, whilst also webscrapping and doing excel / power BI data manipulation.

Given the stated budget (£3000), I would never purchase such a build.

I'd recommend waiting for some advise because, in my opinion, there are multiple concerns there.

-Unknown, low quality case.
-Low-end MB.
-RAM is too slow.
-Suboptimal storage arrangement.
-Poor quality and insufficient PSU.
-Cooler unknown, insufficient for a 7950X.
-Norton is a malware.
-Very basic warranty.

I'm sure @SpyderTracks or someone else will provide an appropriate build for your requirements.

Hi All,

I had some excellent advise on a previous post but have realised that I posted it in the wrong part of the forum. Hopefully this is the best place to share an updated spec for feedback.

Hopefully I've shared all the useful information below, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback:
1. Budget:

2-2.5k. If there was a strong reason to increase further then this could be flexible.

2. What's the PC for:

I'm looking for a multi tasking machine that can easily handle all of the following in parallel:
- running multiple virtual PC / Android emulators (bluestacks),
- web scrapping
- Fairly heavy data manipulation (excel macros & power BI)
Day to day to use for browsing, emails etc. (whilst all of the above is running!)

3. Monitor

Please stick to one thread (I have merged yours together) and the sales advice/desktops forum is a perfectly good place to have it anyway :)

What’s the GPU for exactly? I’m not seeing a use case for one?

There are several areas that would need to be optimised

Good question, I assumed that adding a GPU was fairly standard now and never stopped to think about whether it was actually needed. Part of the reason was that I figured it would help with future proofing.

I occasionally do some video editing (holiday video's etc), presumably the motherboard graphics capability would be enough for that.

I also have some interest in machine learning and AI. I guess I could always add a GPU in the future if needed.

Any suggestions on which parts of the system I should be looking to optimise?

Thank you for the advice it's spot on and really helpful. I'll stick with Windows Pro (as I want bitlocker) and remove that 4th drive (not sure where that came from) but otherwise it looks great.

Thanks so much for the help!
