New Vyper 17 inch Laptop

Hi Folks,

I would like to give a little feedback on my new machine and the experience of working with PC Specialist to design and deliver the final product.
I was looking to replace a ten year old gaming laptop as I was a big fan of the Metro series and wanted to play the latest release Metro Exodus. After finding PCS on line and lots of very positive feedback in terms of happy customers and positive reviews. After all, spending £2K plus on anything is always a big decision, especially without being able to handle the item first. I ordered the below specs.

After placing the order, I had some second thoughts about the GPU, and wondered if I should go for the 2080 Max Q model. I emailed tech support over a weekend and had very prompt responses (from Michael Doran and Rhys Tracey) providing info, stats and even links to youtube about the merits of the different GPU's to put my mind at ease that I had specced the right one for me. I was so impressed with the comprehensive support from the order and thence all the way through until delivery. It made spending such money a much less fraught business.

When the machine arrived, around 13 working days after ordering (bearing in mind this was ordered and built in the middle of a global pandemic) I was so impressed with the quality and thin-ness of the machine. I've only just scratched the surface of what it can do in terms of gaming, but it runs Metro Exodus at high settings with RTX and DLSS etc on. I'll give it a few months use and report back.

Overall, I don't think I've had a more reassuring, transparent and responsive purchase than this one.

Fell free to ask questions or give an opinion on my build.

Thanks Folks

T

I have to wait until July 10
Something pretty weird happened to my order. I originally order with the RTX 2070 but it wasn't in stock then a few days back I amend my order to the RTX 2070 Super although I knew it wasn't in stock till the date you mention. But then a couple of days back moved to build and then testing. So I have no idea how this happens if the RTX 2070 Super is not in stock :s
@SpyderTracks do you know how this was possible?

They may have got a batch early/late

This is the primary reason for all the confusion at the moment, the supplies from China are not being shipped when expected, this is worldwide supplies, not just for PCS, it's kind of hit and miss as China try and get back to normal operation.

That makes sense!

I was afraid that they where building it with the RTX 2070 which is in stock rather than with the 2070 super I amended hehe

2070s is better than 2080maxq, regardless of price or performance

My original doubt was whether I should have specced the 2080maxq instead of the 2070 super I did. I was wondering if the better power and heat profile of the former would have better suited my needs. After some discussion and info review it seemed that the offest in perfomance and increased price of the 2080 mq was not the way to go, so I stuck with the 2070S. I ordered my machine 22nd May and it was delivered 11th June, with around 5 days delay to wait for the GPU.

I've had no issues with the machine so far. I was a little bemused by all the RGB stuff! I was also surprised by how thin and light the machine is. The trackpad seems fine. I haven't spent enough time playing AAA games yet to know if I need a cooler stand/pad thing. I've been playing Metro Exodus and I've been fiddling with the 'mode' button, ie office - turbo-game. This automatically sets the fan speed. I'm not sure what would happen if I left it set to office then tried to play Metro. Would it automatically spin the fans faster? Whos know. I guess I've got a bit of testing to do.

On another note, I'm due to take delivery today of a new mouse to use with the Vyper. I usually buy my wireless mice from Lidl whenever they're in. But I decided I needed summat a bit more fitting so I ordered a Logitech G604.

Thanks
T
