Ok, now I don't know what to do and my anxiety is through the roof 😠 (Thanks for the info though Scott)
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Is there really no appreciable difference in the gaming @1440p performance or the longevity/future proofing with regards to the above i5 & i9 builds?

Most gaming at the moment tends to use 1 primary core and offload some minor processes to secondary cores. The long and short of it is that the game will only really be impacted by the maximum single core speed. Having more cores doesn't really make any odds.

There are a few games now that are more core reliant, and can make decent use out of multiple cores. Turn based games are pretty good at using the cores heavily, but not in a justifiable way for the price difference.

In the future, games will hopefully make better use of the multi-cores. We believe this is highly likely as it seems supported by the consumer chip core-count across the board (at enthusiast level).

With allllll of that in mind, the 12600K is still a fantastic choice as it's still a 10 core chip. No matter which way you slice it, it's going to be an excellent performer for a number of years. The core speed of 4.9Ghz has it performing very well for all gaming scenarios including Flight Sims.

With your use case, anything above is a bit of a waste of cash really as there's nothing you're going to do that's going to warrant a higher end chip.

I personally think the 12900K is a rather silly CPU. It's performance even for productivity apps is typically 5-15% better than the 12700K but power usage is 50% higher. For those for whom time is money it can make sense but for the majority it doesn't.

For gamers though, it's even worse. It's adding at most a few percent to performance and often basically nothing. It's costing more in terms of needing a great motherboard and cooling solution to extract that marginal performance. The 12700K hits me at the highest you would want to go for gaming. It's got 12 cores (8P + 4E) which is more than enough. Really, the 10 core 12600K is probably the right pick.

Future proofing can make sense if the cost is low. Here buying the 12900K over the 12600K is adding £350 in terms of cost. In three years time, the cost of a Raptor-Lake i7-13700K will probably be £250 and it will almost certainly outperform the 12900K.

So, to be clear, the current recommendation here is the i5-12600KF + Z690-PLUS + RTX 3070 (or ti?) for decent gaming @1440p for quite a while?

I'm 99% certain you're right so I'll have a think and decide later tonight. (That'll give everyone else a chance to come up with ANOTHER posibility  )

FYI, I've made a change to my order every day since I put the order in 😂

BTW, @Scott - Is the RGB RAM in your suggested build just for the pretty lights or is it better than the non-RGB?

Something I just thought of, this build could run two screens, right? (my new MAG274QRF-QD for gaming & my old BenQ 1080p for watching video/films)

(I'm very tempted to upgrade to 'Fast Track' too so I'll have less time to change my mind any more 🤣 )

RGB is literally pretty lights so go with your preference, or whatever is cheaper. Believe it or not I've seen the RGB going cheaper at times.

With regards to the rest, I would opt for the TUF Plus Gaming WIFI, that way you don't need a separate WIFI card and you can remove it.

These GPUs will happily support up to 4 monitors. If one is being used for 1440p gaming and the other for watching a video that is not any substantial overhead.

I'd go with the 12600KF and a 3070. If you'd gone with the M34WQ Ultrawide (why didn't you?) you'd have more justication in paying the premium for the 3070 Ti. If you really feel the CPU doesn't have enough bragging rights then get the 12700K(F).

The problem here is your budget is £3k and if the PC only costs £2275 and the monitor say £450, you've only spent £2725. You've come up short. That's a fail.

Seems to me you need to start looking at some damned expensive mechanical keyboards and mice to make up the difference!

Didn't go for the Ultrawide due to space restrictions - very small house, PC has to be in a weird narrow corner.
Not worried about bragging rights at all and the budget was just a ceiling so coming up short is a bonus.
I use a Logitech G915 TKL + Logitech G604 which I really like so I'll just put any leftover money away for the inevitable GPU upgrade down the line.

So, is this my final answer? Should I phone a friend? (or my therapist?) Going once, going twice...

Order ammended, £300+ saved. Cheers guys. (My 5070/6070/7070? fund is off to a healthy start 💰 )

Now, for the sake of my meagre sanity and already too high blood pressure, unless there is something in my final build that will explode on startup, PLEASE don't make any more changes/suggestions 😡 🤣

OK, it's back to the waiting, and keeping the streets of Gotham safe...
