I don't suppose you have a link to the old topic from 2 months ago? The forums only find me your topic from May 2018: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/threads/new-pc-spec-advice-please.59102/

The build is well suited to those titles and that resolution, though arguably you could save a lot of money and see relatively little performance difference.

For instance, the RTX 2060 is not far behind the 2070 in performance but is ~£170 less. Since a 2060 is more or less equivalent to a 1080 for performance, it's already bordering on overkill for 1080p (I've just gone one and am more or less maxing things out at 1440p with it, e.g. Witcher 3, Shadow of War).

The other potential change would be to go with an AMD system based around an R5 2600x. It will be maybe £200-300 cheaper. While performance may be technically less, it should still be more than adequate, and keep a couple hundred quid in your wallet. I no longer play WoW, so can't speak as to whether the 9700k's extra single threaded performance really holds the same kind of advantage as it used to, especially now DX12 is a thing for the game.

Consider the 3TB HDD as it's +50% HDD capacity for £11. Music, movies, saved gameplay videos, extra games, etc can take up quite a bit of room.

In general terms, the spec looks good and balanced,

Sorry my fault,i meant to put 12 months ago,i should have just said a year ,i'll go with the 2060 as you have suggested but the intel is personal preference over amd as wow is our main game and intel has always been better than amd for wow,not sure if that's still the case though, ive also gone for the 3 tb hdd, anything else you would change or no?

Looking back at my old post from last year I went for the 8700k,is the 9700k much better,it has less threads than the 8700 but more cores?

That's right - 9700k is 8C/8T, 8700(k) was 6C/12T.

If WoW is still quite reliant on the performance of a single thread, and especially if you're not overclocking, the 9700k's extra frequency gives it the edge. It has a slight edge in most games anyway, too.

You may - and I say this with some trepidation - want to ask on the WoW forums about DX12 performance and how a Ryzen 2600x does in WoW with/without DX12. My hesitation is that this can result in "i7 best evar 4 gaming!!!!" and "AMD awesome, ignore Intel shills!" levels of debate. But you can always ask and try to sift through what you get; perhaps one of the more technically, and rationally, minded users will reply :)

Intel certainly was preferable for WoW in the past, especially versus FX series AMD CPUs, but Ryzen is a lot more powerful and so may be not only a viable choice but actually a very good choice.

Worth investigating with £200-£300 on the line anyway I guess :)

Actually, knew I'd seen an article knocking around before:
https://www.computerbase.de/2018-07/world-of-warcraft-wow-dx12-directx-12-benchmark/2/

It's a little old now so may not be fully up to date with performance, but it does seem that while Intel has a slight lead, Ryzen CPUs do perform well on DX11 and catch up further with DX12. I've not read / google translated the article in full though. But going by the graph, Intel's lead may not be ~£200's worth of 'lead'

Thanks for the reply.I've already asked on the wow forums and it just seemed to be intel fan boys v amd fan boys with no real technical answers,at the moment I run wow on dx 12 with an intel 6400 and on decent graphic settings quite well so im assuming a ryzen would out perform that by a considerable margin anyways?which ryzen would you suggest with the same build as above?2600x or the 2700?

R5 2600x if going for Ryzen. It's way cheaper and gives very similar performance.

For motherboards, the AORUS Ultra Gaming, as it has a decent balance of features vs price.

Although it has to be said, your i5 6400 isn't a terrible CPU. Are you sure it's worth upgrading yet?

If it's mostly the GPU upgrade you're after, could you get a new GPU for your system and see how that goes?

Should you subsequently find you do need a CPU upgrade, you can always buy a PC without a GPU and swap the new one in.

Need to upgrade as my pc is starting to have problems and I have a feeling it wont last too much longer.Where is the aorus ultra gaming motherboard I don't see that on the drop down menu and I only can choose from intel cpu's,sorry im useless at this

Ok I may have to stay with the intel because ryzen looks like I have to change to slower ram and different hdd and sdd's unless im doing it wrong(quite possible)

ah ok thank you, just one more question.is it worth getting a 2070 or 2080 with the ryzen build or just stay with the 2060?

I'd still stick with the 2060 for 1080p gaming. I'm not convinced the 2070 offers particularly good improved performance for the large additional price, and the 2080 is overkill.
